Veronica felt empty. Abandoned. He had used her.

Turning her face to the pillow, she screamed into it and then sobbed. Her throat catching on every breath until it was sore. Another door opened.

“Nika!”

“He left me, Polly. He just got up and left.”

The strength went from her and she collapsed slowly into the rumpled bedclothes. Her eyes blinded by stinging tears. She sobbed, and every wracking breath was torn from the air as if she were being strangled.

Then Polly was on the bed and her arms wrapped Veronica in warmth.

“I hate him.” Her voice raw with pain. “I’ll never let him touch me again.”

“Do you want his child?”

“No!”

“Better wash yourself out then, no guarantees but it will help.”

She had just read the passage where the heroine, Helen, slams the door on her debauched husband preventing him from doing … something. The scene always made Veronica tremble with excitement—or fear, she was not sure which—because it was such a daring thing to defy one’s husband.

Not that she would ever have to slam her door on a husband, debauched or otherwise. Her marriage prospects were nil, despite her parents’ wealth.
