I take notes with a camera. Besides my authentic photography (see https://take-note.com/about), I'm also interested in promoting the work of other "first-person" photographers, and protecting all authentic photography (analog or digital) from generative AI. And smashing neofascist capitalism. When I’m home, I’m in Montana. #Authentic #Photography #Solidarity #DemocraticSocialism

Getting ready for a state funeral...

Maybe I'll make posters for people who show up to the funeral procession.

Maybe I'll make t-shirts to commemorate the occasion.

Maybe I'll make a set of holiday greeting cards.

Maybe I'll make a bumper sticker.

Maybe I'll make yard signs so that your neighbors can share your solidarity.

Maybe I won't wait until he's dead.

I value ProPublica, enough that I contribute. But I've switched my contribution to the union strike fund until ProPublica workers have a contract.

I hate Adobe almost as much as Ed Zitron. See https://bsky.app/profile/edzitron.com/post/3mhgym3lv5s2q

OurForests.org: Online Organizing Comes of Age — take-note.com

Internet organizing, conducted under the auspices of TechRocks, played a major role in establishing the Clinton Administration's "Roadless Rule." The story is told in the Winter 2001 newsletter of the Environmental Grantmakers Association.

One of my proudest professional accomplishments is developing the technological and organizational capacity to actually influence a president's agenda. We used email to apply massive public pressure, enough that Vice-President Gore's inbox had to be turned off for a week. The result: conservationists got the Roadless Rule, in 2001.

Of course, as with all sane things the federal government does, it's under attack by the fascists.

A photo of Iran’s bombed schoolgirl graveyard went around the world. Was it real, or AI?

Numerous faked images and a string of startlingly inaccurate responses from Gemini and Grok are part of a tidal wave of AI slop engulfing coverage of the Iran war

C2PA was not even mentioned in this article, probably because no one trusts Adobe (the force behind the labeling standard). After all, they stand to make money either way the standard is used.

Is this product 'human made'? The race to establish AI-free logo

The backlash to the growing use of the tech has led to an explosion in attempts to come up with 'AI-Free' logo that could be used globally.

“In my dad's memory, I fight fascism, too"

I was recently in Reims, France—for the champaign. But I happened to be there on the anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. In this room, which was camouflaged at the time by a functioning high school, papers were signed by representatives of the Allied nations, including General Eisenhower, and Germany, who officially surrendered. The document is still displayed in this museum.

Margaret Sullivan posits three rules to spot fake images in https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/mar/13/ai-generated-fake-iran-images. Unfortunately, these rules are far from fool proof.

Instead, why not have camera makers afix a symbol to any photo, a symbol that screams authenticity. It doesn't even need to be obtrusive, just visible (and noted in the ALT text). C2PA exists but I have never seen one in the wild (online).

I wrote about an alternative approach at https://take-note.com/note-takers/marshall--mayer/related-content/apple-protect-authentic-photography. Any camera maker could easily do this (a few have).

AI-generated Iran images are widespread. How do we know what to believe?
