Amsterdam is lovely today - sun and clear skies with a bit of wind. I hope everyone has the opportunity to get out into it today.
Reading the news lately is bad ... but cartoonishly so. Like Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper is running things...
A recent trip to an Amsterdam grocery store suggested to me that anti-American sentiment may be growing in Europe.

The NYPD doesn't just have a long history of corruption and sadism, it also has a tradition of violent civil unrest to resist efforts at reform.

1857: New York Police Riot - Police riot in response to anti-corruption efforts by the State of NY.

1992: Patrolmen's Benevolent Association Riot - Police riot because black mayor tries to institute civilian oversight.

No professional should ever use a general piece of software with “AI” features for client work… Especially not a lawyer.

This isn’t an ethical position, you can be as shady as you like, but software that incorporates algorithmic learning and similar buzzwords is a risk to you. Professionals deal in confidential information and have duty to protect it or face consequences. AI tools depend on collecting information provided to them and reusing it … it's a risky combination.

Publicly available AI applications are useful for translation, summarizing, editing, etc. Unfortunately, giving them protected information to work on is almost always a violation of one’s duty not to disclose confidential information.

A thread ... 1/7

I'm starting the daunting process of looking at the European Union's new tech regulation - The EU Artificial Intelligence Act. So far it's a fascinating document seeming largely of statements of noble intent that are dialed back repeatedly in its all important Recitals. Surprisingly pro-business, and less so pro national/state security.

I will try to drop more tidbits of note here if I can winkle them out of the hundreds of pages of legislation.

I received my first obvious scam message in Dutch this last week - a 1 year immigration anniversary gift.

"Twitter's" new logo appears to be "X" from the font "Special Alphabets 4" by Maisfont.

You can also do a quick rebrand for as little $29.99

I've been quite lately as I've been moving to the Netherlands. Here is my first stampot, with currywurst as proof.

Wondering why SF drivers seem to be trying to run everyone over these days?

Here's a graph of SFPD traffic enforcement over the past few years.
