Hi, I am a weaving archaeologist. Mostly I do historical tablet weaving.
To maintain this beautiful hobby, I sell my creations on etsy.

My latest tablet-weaving project, woven based on a 15th-century trim from Siksälä in Estonia, is done. And I am trying out some new style of photos to present my woven trims and belts with some driftwood and dried flowers.

Another project I am currently working on is a reconstruction of the trim of a richly decorated shroud. The original was found in a woman's grave in the cemetery of Siksälä, Estonia. The woman buried in grave 38 was wrapped in a cloth decorated with metal clasps and a tablet-woven border. The burial dates from between 1300 and 1475 AD. This is what the border trim once looked like:

Yesterday's threads are today's trim.
The pattern is that of Hallstatt Textile 123, which dates dack to the Celtic period. It was found in the salt mines of Hallstatt, where it has been reused and was thus preserved. Originally it was most probably sewn onto a sleeve hem.

It ist so satisfying to have a newly threaded project on the loom. Soon it will be a trim with a pattern from the Celtic period of Hallstatt.

Finally bought a wool winder to make neat little balls of my hand-dyed wool. These are all the shades of green and yellow I dyed using red and yellow onion skins.

The wool has been sitting in the colouring broth the whole day. I finally took it out, rinsed it and hung it out to dry. I am pretty pleased with the colour. Most probably it will lighten a bit when dry, but it is an even and luscius yellow.

I am sieving the onion skins into an old laundry net, put the broth back in the pot and in goes the wool. To keep the wool covered I put the laundry net with the skins in top. Now it has to heat up slowly to about 70 degree Celsius and kept there for about an hour or two.

Both onion skin broth and mordanting bath with the wool have cooled down to room temperature. I will let the wool soak overnight in the mordanting solution as well as the onion skins in their broth. It has a very intense brownish colour. Tomorrow I will sieve the broth and put the wool in. I am very excited about the colour result.

Simmering, simmering onion skin soup🍲.
Give me all your sweet, sweet pigments.

While the wool is in its mordanting bath at about 70 degree Celsius, the onion skins are cooking nicely.
