A theory about vibes: Human beings are deeply social creatures. Our need for a legible social order is rooted almost as deeply in our brainstem as our need for basic physical security. We need -- not want, need -- to understand who's in charge, who are allies, who are enemies, *how things work*.

Paul McCartney just dropped a surprise new protest album with Kate Bush, Annie Lennox, Damon Albarn, Billy Ocean, Ed O’Brien, Dan Smith, The Clash, Mystery Jets, Jamiroquai, Imogen Heap, Yusuf / Cat Stevens, Riz Ahmed, Tori Amos, Hans Zimmer, James MacMillan, Max Richter, John Rutter, The Kanneh-Masons, The King’s Singers, The Sixteen, Roderick Williams, Sarah Connolly, Nicky Spence, Ian Bostridge, and many more.

Not a joke.

SpaceX launches 28 satellites in low-Earth orbit - UPI.com

SpaceX launched another 28 satellites into low-Earth orbit early Sunday morning.

Great system you have there.

The rich can fix it so that they don't get prosecuted, without at least a public shitstorm of epic proportions.

But producing that poisons sadly all possible jury pools, so no prosecution either.

Slow clap of admiration.

Everyone wants them released cause we know what’s in them. But if they are fully released, it’s like a get out of jail card for everyone accused. Public opinion on every network means that there is no jury that could be found to not already have an opinion on what happened on that island. Splashing the details anywhere but a court of law against the accused means no fair trial and no jail time. #epstein #Trump #uspol #law #lawyers #court

We are excited to announce that Eco Youths Network Uganda has started a fundraiser to buy our own land. This land will help us expand organic farming, train more youth, and strengthen our fight against hunger. We invite all our supporters to stand with us. Every contribution brings us closer to this dream. Thank you for believing in our mission and helping us build a better future for our communities.

This is an amazing app that allows you to see (almost) live all the #satellites and #debris (in LEO*) that are in #orbit above our heads.

You can pick one #satellite and get many info, including its orbit.

yeah, it's completely crowded, but we keep launching more and more #rockets 🚀 and much more satellites, like if our ressources were unlimited.

Primed for a future industry dealing with the crap, presumably after the first really expensive catastrophe?

@AlexSanterne @cnes as I wrote recently, Kessler syndrome is one of the things I quite confidently believe to see in my lifetime.

@hllizi @cnes I am honestly hoping for a Kessler syndrome ASAP (in LEO). Yeah, that will be bad and billion $ will be lost, but I'm convinced that this is only shock the space industry can understand to get regulated.

Space is the new WildWest and this crazy international competition is costing us millions of ton CO2eq.

@AlexSanterne @cnes yeah, I also wouldn't mind that much anymore.

@AlexSanterne @cnes

It's crazy the amount of satellites overhead at any one time. Never mind all the debris and used rocket boosters (it's cool seeing them spin about in space. But it's frightening how much is actually up there! We must be getting close to a point of cascade of collisions of some satellites.

@latelesley @cnes Indeed, that's what we call the Kessler syndrome. It was illustrated in the movie Gravity.

@AlexSanterne @cnes

so much junk up there...

@AlexSanterne @cnes
Excellent, but needs an option to turn off night/day illumination. Maybe just draw the terminator line?
@AlexSanterne @cobalt123 @cnes It's funny, but we use non-renewable energy the same way: as if it was unlimited.🤷🏼‍♀️

@mlanger @cobalt123 @cnes I think this is due to our limited capability in considering big numbers.

When something gets really big, we can't disentangle from infinite. As soon as you understand the Earth has limited ressources, albeit quite large in number, we can't act anymore like they were infinite.

That's true at least for normal people. Capitalists will continue to exploit the ressources as long as they get money from them.

@AlexSanterne @mlanger @cobalt123 @cnes I once said that ecology is just economy with the assumption of finite resources.

@AlexSanterne @cnes Oh, I shouldnt have looked. Sooo many things in LEO above my region >.<

@AlexSanterne
This is appalling.
If Musk et al continue launching their space debris, travel to Mars or space outside Earth's atmosphere will become too risky to contemplate, let alone attempt.

@AlexSanterne @cnes It's tempting to say we humans never learn the bigger lesson; we're apparently incapable of generalizing from our experience, so we make the same shortsighted mistakes again and again and again.

But it's more like those plenty of us who do see and generalize and learn are outspent by those with a vested interest in not.

@AlexSanterne "But, if we stop launching satellites, profits and GDP will not grow anymore, prices will rise, investors will not create jobs and then people will die !" 😬😖

This is absolutely terrifying when you see it that way. Even knowing the icons are enormous compared to the actual items, it still feels like we haven't got much time before we hit Kessler Syndrome and low earth orbit becomes impassable for ... some time.

@realtegan Thanks for emphasising that the dots appears way bigger than they actually are.

A Kessler syndrome would fill up the orbits for a few years, to a few centuries (or even beyond) depending on the altitude (among other things).

source: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/228574389_Progress_in_International_Space_and_Astrodynamics_Standards

A Kessler syndrome in MEO (~2000km) would last millennia. Then, bye bye GPS, weather satellites, etc... and we do have there un-passified dead satellites (they are not responding, but still have ergols and not-empty batteries + they are not in a graveyard orbit).

@AlexSanterne @cnes Speaking of satellites and debris in orbit above our heads, how is that Chinese outfit doing after their return rocket was damaged by debris?
@AlexSanterne @cnes Someone should explain to Elon Musk what really is a dyson sphere.
@AlexSanterne @cnes I can imagine that one day we won't have a gap large enough to pass a rocket through, that'll complicate things quite a bit

@danny @cnes satellites appear in the app much larger than they actually are, by a lot. But yeah, it gets crowded and it complicates launch windows.

Starlink wants to send 42000 satellites, much more than they already have. I am guessing this is to control the launch window and get some advantages over competitors (because they can move them to clear the launch path).

@danny @cnes Something like that ?

GIF from Disney's WALL-E

@AlexSanterne @cnes this is something that I hate about starlink, the fact that for it to work it seemingly needs thousands of satellites all orbiting at once

I like that you sent that gif from WALL-E lol, I was thinking the exact same thing

@AlexSanterne @cnes

This is an amazing resource, thanks for sharing! Am I alone in feeling awe and a little sick to my stomach? 🤢
