The Executive Program in Digital Media for Social Impact is accepting applications for the 2024 cohort. A partnership between the Annenberg School for Communication the School of Social Policy and Practice, this executive program helps changemakers not only master their digital tools, but develop a digital practice that reflects their goals and values. Now that #AoIR2023 is over, Geographies of Digital Wasting is searching for somewhere new to travel and rest its head. There will be a website next week (www.geographiesofdigitalwasting.com) but we are looking for somewhere to host the physical version between now and the start of the Spring semester. If you or your institution are interested in displaying this project, please reach out!
Researchers from around the world explored media from the "long 1990s" at CARGC's recent symposium, a satellite event of #AoIR2023: https://www.asc.upenn.edu/news-events/news/forums-dial-and-satire-1990s-internet-global-south

Hot off the press!!!! 🔥 Come work with @nancybaym @tarleton @zephoria & Mary Gray (and me!) at Microsoft's Social Media Collective, it's a great postdoc! Happy to field questions from anyone interested in applying ✨️ #aoir2023
Need a quiet room #AoIR2023? We have designated the Calder Suite (on the 8th floor) as our stimulus-free space. In this space, there is no eating, talking, using devices that others can hear, or other behaviors that might disturb others. Contact the association coordinator or stop by the registration table if you have questions about accessing the room.
And Juan's new book, Border Tunnels, is also hot off the press! Saw it for the first time in the wild at #AOIR2023 at the Ideas on Fire table.
Just got out of a great talk by Juan Llamas-Rodriguez at #AOIR2023 talking about the term "whitexican," a term that sprung up on social media to encapsulate an array of concerns about class and race in the definition of what it means to be Mexican. Even if the term does nothing more than mock tone-deaf social media posts, Juan made the case that the term provides language with which to discuss and dismantle racialism in Mexico.
Hey #AoIR2023 friends! Don’t forget that tonight from 5-7pm in the forum of the Annenberg School for Communication (3620 Walnut St. 1st Floor), we are holding a reception for our exhibit Geographies of Digital Wasting: Electronic Waste From Mine to Discard and Back Again. There will be food, booze, and merriment had by all. We hope to see you there! @AoIR @AnnenbergPenn @AnnenbergCARGC
Many thought-provoking ideas from Kat Higgins and Sarah Banet-Weiser this morning at #AOIR2023 about the ways that our hypermediated world can allow victims of sexual violence to be heard, but then those same platforms give voice to counterattacks by those accused. As platforms algorithms favor outrage, arguments by the accused tend to dominate, whether by real people or bots. There's a lot to know, so you can read it in their new book, Believability, out now from Polity!
