see this is what happens when you pretend to be religious but don't actually know how the story ends

My best shot at a stock photo for the #Fediverse, showing its most popular projects.

Please show some mercy, I am not a hand model (obvi) and my masking skills are a little rusty.

If some photographers would like to improve it, I could share my original photo and screenshot.

Hilariously, when I opened the tripod my bracelet got stuck in it and I semi-panicked for a few moments because I was home alone... with a tripod stuck to my wrist. Thankfully I managed to free myself 😂

Ground Truths
Today is my birthday! I'm 32, but I feel so much older. I wonder why...

We've received more offers to acquire our platform/assets.

We belong to the people.

Our Kickstarter is launching soon, help us prove that we, the people, can build healthy and vibrant communities, without being controlled by vested interests who don't share our values.

Recent events have proved how vital these open and federated platforms are, help us continue building for the people.

Spread the word ✨

The TikTok ban, the Musk Twitter takeover, the Facebook moderation policy changes, the Republicans’ rapidly intensifying crackdowns on speech... let these be the proof you needed to move anything you care about online to a space you control.

Digital sovereignty is more important than ever.

#DigitalSovereignty

TikTok is also my biggest platform, if you want to support my work please buy a yearly subscription to UserMag.co, if it's not something you can afford please subscribe for free and/or share links!! Every little bit helps when you're up against an entire massive right wing media structure.

I've received 5 VC offers "to chat" regarding Pixelfed in the past few days.

Not for sale.

Pixelfed belongs to the people.

I'd rather be broke and true to my beliefs, than sell out.

That's why I'm organizing a Kickstarter to fund the ethical development of Pixelfed, Loops and more.

It's time that someone stood up to them, instead of joining them.

Are you with me?

@pixelfed wasnt facebook at first something to rate campus girls or sth

@ctrl https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/06/fool-me-twice-we-dont-get-fooled-again/: »Facebook, a cancer of a company founded to nonconsenually rate the fuckability of Harvard undergrads (incredibly, that was Facebook’s least terrible moment. It actually got worse after that)«

@pixelfed

Fool Me Twice We Don’t Get Fooled Again – Pluralistic: Daily links from Cory Doctorow

@wonka @ctrl @pixelfed We're pretty sure the people of Earth, as a whole, have rated Zuck the Cuck -1,000,000,000 for f***ability 🤭

@StrangeCulprits The saddest part is that despite all his material wealth he never managed to buy something remotely approaching a personality. Take his net worth and prepend a negative, that's about it. Net Worthlessness.

@wonka @ctrl @pixelfed

@wonka @ctrl @pixelfed

Wise words from Cory Doctorow;
"From now on, I will put more weight on how easy it is to leave a service than on what I get from staying. A bad service that you can easily switch away from is incentivized to improve, and if the incentive fails, you can leave."

@ctrl To paraphrase: "They're giving us all this personal information for free. Fucking morons."

@proactiveservices @ctrl This. Right. Here.

I mean, I've said and done plenty of immature shit when I was young, too.

I DO think about the good things he's done, like integrating pgp support into fb, open sourcing llama.. But shit like this just means the overall company culture still needs to grow up and learn how to be better on a fundamental level.

Of course, when your corp is legally tied to maximizing profits FIRST, what can you do?

I wonder what his actual feelings are on the matter

@lns @proactiveservices sure rating girls was immature shit

they kinda did a lot more later on, like enabling a fucking genocide, so regardless of the few lil good things they do, i am convinced they are evil to the core and than meta should be destroyed
@lns @proactiveservices also they created react which is unforgivable

@ctrl
same thought exactly

(attributing any idealism to the origins of facebook is just wrong)

@pixelfed

@pixelfed maybe he can carve out some time from his busy trump inauguration party organising schedule to read it 🤪
@gergolippai @pixelfed Between fucking the ostrich and kissing the orange anus Zuckerberg is busy, probably will not read it.

@pixelfed it may help to shorten the letter

Dear Zuck,

Get bent, loser

Signed,
All of us

@endeavorance @pixelfed nice... would've been better to end it with "dumb fuck" but... cool...

@pixelfed "Remember when Facebook started? It was about rating women."

Fixed it for you.

@pixelfed this is great but Zuck’s early “dumb fucks” comment highlighted his real attitude

Deutsche Übersetzung:

»Lieber Mark,

Also danke, Mark. Sie haben unser kleines Projekt in ein Symbol des Widerstands gegen digitale Monopole verwandelt.«

(Maschinell übersetzt)

@pixelfed this reads like somebody with maturity issues wrote it. Also at least export the thing into a pdf first, the squiggly lines and text cursor are still visible

More importantly, Zuckerberg didn’t build Facebook because he believed in anything, at least not anything good - initially the project was to rate college girls on their appearances

@Mudlark @pixelfed

You a very true about your observations…

Just found out that people finally started to speak out about these issues.

@pixelfed we are all with you!!
@pixelfed
rage is young. 👊

@pixelfed This must be read in the same tone Kain used when addressing the elder god at the end of “Defiance”.

“Your words are heartening. For you would not fear us unless we could truly do you harm. False god. This is the end. The final turn of your wheel.”

@pixelfed "it was about connecting people" Uh huh, specifically sexist, usually male people, so that they could more easily objectify women. Kissass

@SallyStrange @pixelfed

True about the origin of the app, but I really don't think it's meant as an actual compliment.

"connecting people" is what Meta employees tell themselves. Daniel is speaking to the ego of the Meta bosses, the story they tell about themselves, to their lower ranks, and to the rest of the world.

The fact that Meta blocks opportunities to connect therefore goes in the face of the story they tell themselves and to others.

@SallyStrange @pixelfed

It would've been cooler if he told the true story though, it would've been more devastating, and set Pixelfed apart much more.

@amici @pixelfed Not telling the truth means the letter writer didn't know the truth, or thought that the difference between "connecting people" vs "objectifying women" isn't worth mentioning. Both possibilities mean the letter writer is sexist.

@SallyStrange @pixelfed

I'd call that a very strong character accusation. It's a valid complaint that he missed the actual origins, but I would not venture so far in characterizing a person, if it's based off a single mocking letter.

@amici @pixelfed nah man, you can't look at structural bigotry through the lens of personal character. If the letter writer is unaware of FB's sexist origins, that means they're not tuned into even the most basic of feminist information sources, which means they're marinating in the same background misogyny that we all are. It's easily remedied and it doesn't mean they, personally, hate women--but it's still sexism.
@pixelfed Supernault is a pretty cool name.
@pixelfed Dude very nice! Keep going.

@pixelfed

A professional business model doesn't rely on lies to make money, nor do they help their clients spread lies and dangerous conspiracies. So maybe we shouldn't look at Facebook as a model for professionalism. But that just my rant. You may see thing differently.

@pixelfed It was never about connecting people, it was always about „engagement”.
Make Socials Social Again

Wij roepen publieke organisaties op om samen de eerste stap te zetten door alternatieven te gaan gebruiken voor Big Tech sociale media platformen.

@pixelfed No surveillance capitalism*

*but it still owns everything that gets posted there in every way, shape, and form to use however Dan sees fit, forever.

Please work on that terms of service

@pixelfed loving the new web interface btw. (The dark mode 😍)
@pixelfed 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
@pixelfed Mark be like: What do you mean? want to compete with me?
@pixelfed I don't think facebook was ever about "connecting people" though ^^

@pixelfed @paul_e_cooley unfortunately, intentionally or accidentally. Dan is following Elon's 'move fast and break things' mentality.

He's doing great things for fediverse visibility... but being a one man show leads to getting your ego involved or missing things (like Loops' egregious rights over-reach in its TOS).

Dan's done a lot of good... I just hope he can avoid an Icarus-style crash and burn that could undo a lot of that good.
..

@john
@paul_e_cooley

I’ve seen my fair share myself - tried to contribute to this project… But yeah quite impossible.

Just found out people finally started to speak out about these wider problem(s)

An open letter to NLnet

@pixelfed I believe texts get better when we step aside for a few cycles and not let ourselves be driven by the highness of attention. Zuckerberg has never been what you describe. There is no grassroots moral origin we could jumpstart in the back of his memory. It is historically evident that Facebook, later meta has frequently chosen the unethical paths when they had choice to. There is no ancient ideal to appeal to. No renaissance can happen.
@pixelfed great letter! Rooting for you all the way!! A couple of years after I started NadaMoo, I got a cold call from the retired director of sales for Ben and Jerry’s. “Your product has ‘legs’” he said, “and I want to help.” No threats from lawyers followed. Because Ben and Jerry got it right: equity, sustainability and community can be the pillars of successful businesses. They were not in my niche market, but they still cared about the people in my niche market.

@pixelfed this "open letter" is embarassing... to Pixelfed.

"connecting people"? Facebook was created to predate on women and use their data without their consent!!! it was NEVER about connecting people, it was always about misogyny, ego and money.

@pixelfed
"without harvesting their personal data"?
Maybe someone should tell the lawyers who drafted the Loops TOS that :)

loops.video - phil@bajsicki:~$

Been a while. I’ve mostly been posting on the Fedi, but I feel like this is a rather important topic that requires attention. Recently @dansup has been posting a bunch about loops.video, a federated alternative to Instagram/ TikTok. While I agree that an open, free and federated alternative to these platforms is necessary, I am consistently finding myself questioning the intentions encoded in their Terms of Service. Before going further, I’ll clarify: loops.video is not currently federating, but federation is planned using the ActivityPub protocol. If it does happen, and the ToS isn’t properly adjusted, it will cause problems.
