Situating Data

aking up the challenges of the datafication of culture, as well as of the scholarship of cultural inquiry itself, this collection contributes to the critical debate about data and algorithms. How can we understand the quality and significance of current socio-technical transformations that result from datafication and algorithmization? How can we explore the changing conditions and contours for living within such new and changing frameworks? How can, or should we, think and act within, but also in response to these conditions? This collection brings together various perspectives on the datafication and algorithmization of culture from debates and disciplines within the field of cultural inquiry, specifically (new) media studies, game studies, urban studies, screen studies, and gender and postcolonial studies. It proposes conceptual and methodological directions for exploring where, when, and how data and algorithms (re)shape cultural practices, create (in)justice, and (co)produce knowledge.

When you teach ChatGPT, teach the whole story, teach labour, teach students to see the materiality and social costs of these tools:

Hello Mastodon.

I am looking for new PhD students to come work with me at the Oxford Internet Institute in 22/23 (@oiioxford) to study the future of data privacy and digital rights, the impact of AI and algorithms on digital platforms, and help co-create better digital futures.

Boosts very much appreciated! 🐘

Here's something I've been working on since 2020:

A Google doc with links to resources (broadly construed) at the intersection of #technology, #philosophy, #politics, cultural studies, and the #socialsciences

It's divided between the academic and the non-/para-academic (tho that line isn't always clear). Originally I made it for my students- maybe others will find it useful.

UZH: Postdoc Position at the UZH Social Computing Group

Applications are invited to a postdoc position in the Social Computing Group at the University of Zurich (Switzerland), headed by Prof. Anikó Hannák. We seek a candidate who will lead innovative computational social science projects around the topics of algorithms' role in societal problems, privacy, and fairness on online platforms. The group's research focuses on how digitization affects people and society, especially problems that arise due to automated decision-making and algorithms that curate smartphone apps and online platforms. We ask questions such as “Are Web Search results correct, relevant, and how do they influence opinions?” or “Are algorithms used by job search sites discriminating?”. Our work revolves around critically inspecting online platforms, and addressing fundamental social scientific questions using computational methods. Beyond research excellence, emphasis is places on the social relevance and real-world impact of our topics. The lab is embedded in a network of vibrant academic collaborations with both first-class international partners, and a highly interdisciplinary local community. It is also important to mention that the computer science department at UZH dedicates a large part of its education and research focus on data science and people-oriented computing.
