I had a blast chatting with some bright Year 12 students from the National Youth Science Forum all about #scicomm and #science in #cinema on Saturday 🎬🍿👩‍🔬 A very talented and creative group of high schoolers - we loved how they approached our @sci_burst scenarios!

Also thank you to my #Mastodon #network for your #climate movie suggestions! I ended up using some of them as examples 🤩

#HappyNewYear !!! 🎉🎊🎆

Following tradition, here are my five star reads and #genre favourites for 2024 😍📚

What were yours?

Every #cybernetic #fieldwork trip uncovers new perspectives. This time, in the back of my mind, were Jean Beatson and Kathleen Gardiner.

In 1927, Jean and Kathleen drove from Melbourne to Darwin through the harsh Australian outback in a Lancia Lambda 🏎️✨ At the time there were no proper roads, so they followed the #telegraph line and also stayed the night at repeater stations.

In 2024, we followed the traces of Jean and Kathleen. Here’s what we found.

More good news in the #renewables space. #Solar energy has gone exponential this year 📈☀️ A graph from The Economist.

I have to say, from a #scicomm perspective this graph is a little hard to understand - it took me a minute to figure out what was going on. I feel like one of those ‘animated’ ones showing the changes over time or a more simple line graph might’ve worked better.

But cool nonetheless!

Last week I visited St Julian's School in #Portugal, formerly a key cable station in the late 1800s part of the global #telegraph network. 🇵🇹🌍

So much of the property’s historical roots are still present - including photos from the 1880s & Eastern Telegraph Company #furniture ! 🏫🪑

Nearby I also found a telegraph pole lurking in an azulejo tile 💙🤍. Thinking about the repurposing of #technology and how #historical #systems leave lasting cultural imprints. Do you have any interesting examples too?

#Lisbon being very #cutesy, very #demure, very #WesAnderson 💖

My new #ImpostorSyndrome hack:

Whenever I hear comments about #scicomm not being ‘real’ science, or see the discipline excluded yet again from a drop-down list of STEM fields, career guides etc etc, I remind myself that the word ‘scientist’ was literally coined for a science communicator (and woman!) - the fabulous ✨ Mary Somerville ✨ (who you really should google, if you don’t know about her).

Hopefully that helps someone else feel better today too 🫶

Photos from #cybernetic and #archaeology #fieldwork last week, researching the Australian Overland Telegraph Line as a large-scale historical system, and all its interwoven pieces (social, technological, environmental).
