alright, time to try this instance migration thing... catch you on the flipside 🤞🏼
dunno if this is an a(u)dhd thing, or just a bad habit... feels like when trying to contribute to a conversation, it's often a tossup whether my reply is actually on topic or a tangent to something adjacent that i'm passionate about (and it's really hard to tell sometimes until after the words are out, and i reflect on others' responses to them)

Yeow. Apparently replying with a thumbs-up emoji to a photograph of a contract can be as legally binding as *signing the contract*, at least in some circumstances.

Canadian farmer ordered to pay more than $92,000 after confusion over the meaning of a thumbs-up emoji

The judge ruled that a thumbs-up emoji the farmer sent in response to a photo of a contract was enough to agree to its terms.

In 1998, I stayed online for over 20 hours straight and got a warning email from my ISP

how to get to sesame street

I will probably regret this later, but... I'd like to publish an indie science magazine!

At least one issue anyway, we'll see how it goes. 😅

Details:

So for a long time I've wanted a way to showcase other cool science creators (on YT, blogs, etc) and also share papers and academic work I'm reading.

I've considered starting a podcast, or writing an email newsletter, or a segment on the channel. But none have felt "right"

Someone jokingly suggested a physical newsletter. It stuck in my brain and evolved into

- Quarterly magazine
- Topics in mat. sci, optics, micro fab, manufacturing, high vac, etc
- Blurbs about hobby projects & videos
- Summaries of papers
- Interviews w/ Creators & academics

It could easily be digital, but frankly I like to read paper media. It's nice to sit in a hammock and read a magazine or book, yunno? I have enough screen time in my life.

Goal is 20-40 pages, nice paper, full color. Trade magazine or maybe digest size? $15-25 USD?

Looking for magic numbers

i'm not denying the tension it causes, especially for users who feel pressure to re-home right after settling in somewhere. but, i can't help feeling like people aren't articulating what's actually on their mind when they object on these grounds, or their motivations for being on social media are fundamentally different from mine

i mused about some of this last year, but there's a dynamic i didn't predict and still struggle to empathize with

it's super odd to me that many folks opposed to instances preemptively blocking zuck, frame the decision as "admins holding users hostage". this seems to come with the assumption that "admins" are purely this objective, dispassionate entity outside each instance's community, rather than active participants in it, well aware of the standards and preferences of its members
