As I move steadily toward publication with my first full blown RPG creation, I keep discovering new questions to ask. The one that's occurred to me now is this: how consistent does the art style need to be? Like, should I hire a single artist? Is it enough to just pick a style and be okay with slight variations between artists? Should I loosen up and accept any/all genre-appropriate styles? Am I getting ahead of myself to even think about it already?

@JacobSKellogg I haven't actually published anything yet, so take this with a grain of salt, but I vastly prefer products that have a cohesive art style. For Sword, Axe, Spear, & Shield, I've formed a close working relationship with a single illustrator to guarantee consistent style and quality.

otoh, it will take much longer to finish all the art for SASS than if I worked with several artists.

@JacobSKellogg It depends on the product and the scope!

In general, more consistent is better, but if you have two or three artists that can keep close to the style you want, that'll mean quicker turn-around and project completion (at the expense of a little more management work).

@JacobSKellogg Is your text done? Are you doing the layout yourself or hiring someone? Do you know how many pieces of art you need, what sizes, and where they go in the text? If the answer to any of these s "I'm not sure!", then the answer to your last question is "yeah, probably!" While I definitely think about and sometimes contact artists to see if they are available, I know my job is also to be able to give them solid details of size, color vs BW vs greyscale, number of pieces & timelines.
