I still dont get the whole "Instances" thing. What're the differences between mastodon.social, mastodon.art, and the fediverse? Speak to me as though Im your 78yr old Mimaw, you love me but know I need help sometimes.

@denidimochka each instance is the Mastodon software running on a different server (like post offices). They ā€œfederateā€ to share the posts between each other (send letters) so it doesnā€™t matter which one youā€™re on, you can still communicate with everyone. Email works much the same way. The benefit is there is no single controlling instance like there is with Twitter, Facebook, etc.

@denidimochka accounts are per instance, so same name can be used in different instances.

Instances form fediverse. One account's message is passed to other instances so people in different instances can talk to each other.

Local timeline is messages of your home instance, while federated timeline shows all messages that have reached your home instance.

Some instances like .social are pretty general, while some focuse on some subject. Difference is visible in local timeline.

@denidimochka I use my mastodon.art alt to freely natter on about detailed art crap without worrying that I'll put off people who don't care about art. My .social alt is for general life stuff BUT if I am unveiling a piece on .art I will boost it on .social so everyone who follows me both places will see it.

I think a little compartmentalizing is good, just so followers who like me as a person but don't like me art don't get irritated.
