Hey #Fediverse, what is your thoughts on #decentralization technologies such as #ssb, #dat and #cjdns? I think that this #scuttlebot thing is kinda cool but I am thinking about how does it scales (as in how long does it take to .ssb to fill my drive)

Anyone also using it? Any interest in a multi-client for ssb and mastodon?

@soapdog I think stuff like #scuttlebutt and #rotonde are interesting, but I wonder how they would handle harassment/abuse. It seems to me very similar to having a single-user instance, i.e. you are your own admin and thus you're responsible for blocking/muting/moderating, which a lot of folks might not want to deal with.

@nolan you just touched a topic that had been circling here on my chaotic mind which is single person instances that become useful through federation. They should be easier to build and host than multi-account instances...

As for moderation maybe we could have an instance subscribe to the moderation rules of a collection of trusted instances. As in, in my single user instance, I follow toot.cafe moderation rules because I trust the admins. Maybe this works?

@soapdog Yep that sounds reasonable to me, except currently it's not baked into the software. I think eventually Mastodon will probably want some kind of system of federating blocklists (and also whitelist mode ala awoo.space). This stuff just doesn't scale; it's only working fine for the moment because the fediverse is still a bit niche.
@soapdog I like decentrilization and use dat. However, the biggest issue I see is the lack of stability and usability for spreading it.

@soapdog reminds me of wanting to run #ssb

multiclient for ssb...really? 😻
YES!

@paulfree14 I will try #ssb and think about how we can grow a tiny multi-client :D the more stuff around these technologies the better.
@soapdog I also feel like decentralization will only be effective if we also politically and economically decentralize as well.
@Benjamin I'd like that as well but it is a change that is too big and too hard in my opinion. Maybe something for the long term future. Maybe after basic income becomes a reality and if people has access to a decent life through it then decentralization becomes possible in the political sense. Taking care o billions of people is hard.
@soapdog decentralization is good but federation is easier. moderation is tricky, hosting is tricky, etc
@Vopo oh definitely. I love federation as well. Moderation is a challenge everywhere. I don't remember a system that has easy moderation...
@soapdog moderating is harder in a decentralized system than in a federated one.
@soapdog I like #ssb and will probably continue using it, although there aren't so many people on that system as seem to be in the fediverse.

cjdns I ran at one time a few years ago, but I didn't really have a use for it at the time.

@bob I am yet to try it out, I am intrigued though
