Dear fellow #Mastodon users. Please be patient with the people creating Mastodon and GNU Social.

Writing software takes time, and the teams working on these applications are very small.

Most of them are also wearing many hats. Some are students, others have full time non-Mastodon jobs. Some admin instances in addtion to writing code.

The Twitter kitchen probably has more people working in it than the entire #Fediverse. Please adjust your expectations accordingly! ๐Ÿ˜„

@HerraBRE How easy is it to help? How can we support the team best?

How to help FOSS devs:

If you're happy, let them know! Often most of the feedback software developers and admins get is complaints about bugs. Happy feedback motivates.

If you're unhappy, file friendly bug reports and be patient.

Some have a Patreon, where money can be donated. That reduces stress and frees up more time to focus on development.

There is also always code that needs writing or messages that need translating or documentation that needs writing.

@andrej

@andrej Have fun and be social! And whenever services go down or fail, enjoy the downtime and get some sun!
@herrabre I'd suggest adjusting level of input but I suppose that is part of expectation
@HerraBRE This will take time, so letยดs enjoy first instead of complaning. @moke
@HerraBRE I've actually been super impressed by how quickly the Masto team are rolling out things.
@HerraBRE it's open-source! Got an improvement or gripe? Feel free to chip in! ๐Ÿ˜…

@Shawn Agreed, but we do need to be careful with that attitude.

We don't want to ignore people's legitimate requests / bug-reports / desires just because they can't code.

Valuable insights can come from everywhere, and considering the diversity issues in geekdom we need to be careful to keep an ear open.

@HerraBRE encouraging people to chip in is the message to convey. Don't ignore the emoji's
@Shawn I'm not, but some people do feel excluded by that so I just wanted to mention it. We're on the same page I think. ๐Ÿ‘
@HerraBRE wow, is that a secret Twitter compliment on Mastodon?
@Ash It wasn't intended that way, but whatever floats your boat... ๐Ÿ›ฅ
@HerraBRE But I really want [obscure feature like 3 people will use] and am prepared to put in 0 hours of work for it! Waa!
@HerraBRE Yes. Fantastic job, Mastodevs.
@HerraBRE Well said, I think the vast majority of long term members will be patient. Especially with how bad twitter has gotten.
