Next time I decide to do a server upgrade at 11pm after having had a drink or two, I need someone to stop me. Like, physically *restrain* me
That systemd stuff was terrifying and mostly I'm just glad that everything isn't on fire right now. Thank you for your patience โค๏ธ

In the decentralized world, you've exchanged a battle-hardened array of machine-learning optimized, finely-tuned Google robots with one very flawed dude who had a hard day at work and has a beer in one hand and is eyeing the edibles but knows he probably shouldn't cross-fade if he's going to go mucking around in the server, especially not when it's almost midnight and there's a Ruby upgrade involved.

I am honored at the trust you put in me. It is certainly not well-deserved. ๐Ÿ™‡

In case it's not clear, I'm going to be utterly paranoid about backups and update scripts from now on ๐Ÿ˜…
@nolan automation my friend ๐Ÿ˜ฌ hit me up if you want to talk/discuss automating the ordeal you just went through. Sleep tight!
@nolan I'm guessing you probably know this from being a microsoftie but those finely tuned Google robots? Flawed folks with beer in one hand and THOSE ARE GUMMY BEARS SHUT UP STEVE on their desk, doing ill-advised upgrades every night. We're all in this together :) Now go get some sleep :)
@sungo lolol I guess I just like to imagine that Google does it better somehow. I have to have some kind of ideal that I hold in my head
@nolan The difference is that Google typically has hot backups to fail over with tons of redundancy. The privilege of having millions of dollars to spend. But there's a reason us sysadmins act like we all survived 'nam together.
@sungo @nolan Your faith in our professionalism amuses me.
@surma @sungo I like to dream that someone out there is more professional than me
@sungo @nolan Yes. Half-ironically. Half-defeated. ;)
@surma @nolan I have no faith in our professionalism. But if I talk like everyone is terrible all the time, my bitterness will just get worse and I'll have to go live in a cave and rant about satellites or something
@sungo @nolan OOooh, letโ€™s rant about satellites! That sounds fun! ๐Ÿ›ฐ๐Ÿ›ฐ๐Ÿ›ฐ

@sungo @nolan oh my God the gummy bears OH MY GOD

SRE: The art and science of taking everything too far

@nolan upgrades that end in "suddenly, systemd!" are always exiting
@nolan haha, I've been guilty of this many times! Never ends well ๐Ÿ˜
@nolan last time I touch my system like this I have broken #NAT rules and could not reach it anymore #rescuemode
