Speaking of first time user experience, there is probably a lot of room for improvement for the "onboarding" screen. It's kinda out of everybody's mind because you only see it once ever.

I get to see it more during development, and it doesn't look great.

The fact that we don't do any tracking or analytics complicates matters. It's really hard to tell whether a change actually has any positive effect. I literally don't have any data to tell me whether after we added the onboarding modal more new users stayed or not.
@Gargron This did surprise me about Masto when I joined. Is there a reason analytics is particularly difficult to implement, or is it just not high enough compared to other priorities?
@edensaesthetic No it's not hard to add we're just against tracking and 3rd party scripts.

@Gargron @edensaesthetic Many people who have stayed have experience of having initially left for a while, or know others who didn't stay. I think a survey of users would allow you to learn something from these insights.

People stop using for multiple reasons including time and motivation, that are beyond your reach. But one design element could be not knowing how to find people to follow, if your instance's local timeline isn't doing it for you.

I truly appreciate the way that users are invited to and feel empowered to make suggestions about how to improve both the software of Mastodon (typical of open source) and the user experience (not as commonly part of the process.)
