The federation/migration problem in mastodon seems very important. My broader thought: SMTP/NNTP/etc. thrived because of a set of trusted entities (govt/uni) that could reliably run federated servers. My choice of server is going to be based on which one is most likely to be up and running years in the future.

Who should those entities be today?

@auerbach Maybe: EFF, ACLU, Centre for Investigative Journalism, FSF, FSFE, Tor project, Reporters without borders

But I'll prefer to not use US-based ones, since they'd be beholden to some very draconian laws

@OliverUv You made me think: choosing a mastodon server right now is most like choosing a VPN. How do you determine how to trust a VPN provider?
