automation threatens our survival only because so many of us can only access the means of survival by selling our labor, but it doesn't have to be like this. machinery itself is no more the enemy of the people than the yak or the plow. capitalism is the enemy.

@garbados i'm not entirely sure it doesn't also threaten our survival in ecological terms.

i mean: computation seems like it's one of the major drivers (on top of fossil fuel extraction) for a civilization operating at a scale the biosphere probably can't withstand for much longer.
