finally got round to watching Gincho Wataridori ("Wandering Ginza Butterfly") (dir. Kazuhiko Yamaguchi, 1972) starring Meiko Kaji, Tatsuo Umemiya, and Tsunehiko Watase

I don't think it's possible for any film to be more "my jam" than this, and I absolutely loved it from start to finish. it just oozes 70s cool that makes this the best film decade imo. it's a bit silly, a bit cheesy, but who cares about that I could literally watch Meiko Kaji all day

Kaji plays Nami, recently released from prison and working as a hostess. when the madam of her bar is fucked over by the local unscrupulous yakuza boss she tries to hustle him at pool to pay off the debt. she wins the game but the yakuza refuse to honour the deal, and Umemiya is killed in the fallout

cue the violent climax with Kaji slicing up countless yakuza goons Lady Snowblood style (she even has the umbrella sword)

great soundtrack too, it was Meiko Kaji's debut album (2nd pic is my copy of the CD with it's gorgeous wraparound cover)

'Wandering Ginza Butterfly' is glorious! 😎

I got it from Arrow based on a recommendation from @outofprintarchive and love it so much.

Seeing it sent me off on a bit of a Meiko Kaji thing, as previously the only movie of hers I'd seen was 'Lady Snowblood', and since then I've also watched 'Wandering Ginza Butterfly: She-Cat Gambler'(which I now need to get as #PhysicalMedia too!), and 'Stray Cat Rock: Delinquent Girl Boss".

I'm so jealous of that CD! 🤩

@imalcolm @outofprintarchive a label called Wewantsounds have been reissuing all of Meiko Kaji's early albums, they're based in France but you might be able to get them where you are, I've been getting them from ebay

"Hajiki Uta" is amazing

@imalcolm @outofprintarchive also, "Blind Woman's Curse" is another one of her early films, Arrow released it a few years ago. it's great. directed by Teruo Ishii

Blind Woman's Curse (1970)

Akemi is a dragon tattooed leader of the Tachibana Yakuza clan. In a duel with a rival gang Akemi slashes the eyes of an opponent and a black cat appears, to lap the blood from the gushing wound. The cat along with the eye-victim go on to pursue Akemi’s gang in revenge, leaving a trail of dead Yakuza girls, their dragon tattoos skinned from their bodies.

That one is on my watchlist as I missed out on the print run and now it's gone.
Only get a random seller popping up once in a while asking €60 for it and most of them are scalpers from the US. 🤬

Just had another look.
Now they are asking €100 for it before taxes and shipping!

@outofprintarchive @imalcolm I got lucky and found someone selling the blu-ray by itself for cheap (it was one of the blu-ray/DVD double packs Arrow used to do, and I didn't want the DVD anyway)

@COMPU73E

Aha! Went to add 'Blind Woman's Curse' to my Letterboxd watchlist and found it was already there! Your recommend makes me even keener to track it down!
