The mayor of Shelbyville, Indiana, says only people who live in ‘shitty houses’ oppose data center

Residents of Shelbyville, Indiana, say Mayor Scott Furgeson was disrespectful after he said only people living in “shitty houses” opposed a data center.

The Verge
@verge I'm guessing he's not running for the next elections 🤔
@verge i'd expect that from Mayor Quimby but not Shelbyville.
@verge Something only a shitty mayor would say.
@verge looks to me like the mayor is looking for an AI payday.
@verge @siracusa ‘The mayor regrets that his choice of words revealed his true thoughts’

@verge Did he check with the people living in shitty apartments? How about the homeless?

No?

Yeah, didn't think so.

@verge How stupid does the stupid mayor of mumpyville, IN think we are?
We're in a decent neighborhood in PA and LOATHE data centers and we know we're being ripped off again and again. But go ahead and con the maggots, they'll believe it and put it next to their homes.
@verge Sounds, like it's from a Simpsons Episode...
@verge okay, so build everybody in town a new house and enjoy your data centre.
@verge
What do the people of Springfield have to say about what the mayor of Shelbyville has to say about data centers?
@Guillotine_Jones @verge The data centers are now where they belong—near the homes of poor people
@verge @siracusa Also, I hear they steal lemon trees.

@verge
Y'know, throughout the Midwest, companies that are an environmental negative, but an employment positive, like refineries, have a quiet policy of *buying* the "shitty houses" that abut their plants when they come on the market, creating buffer zones so that nobody has to live next door to them, meaning there's no one to complain to the city or the EPA.

They don't always tear them down, because that would look worse, so they paint them and keep the lawns mowed, but otherwise it becomes a Potemkin neighborhood.

@verge I bet they also opposed the monorail…
@Janne_O @verge
"I sold data centers to Shelbyville, Brockton and North Haverbrock and that only put them on the map!"
@verge the cruelty is just shameful. I say put a DC in this dochebags back yard. Fucking scum bags.
the obvious solution then would be to build the data centers by the nice houses. problem solved.
@verge
@verge The people in the nice houses are the only ones who will benefit from the data center.
@verge they should vote this guy out and let him live in a “shitty house”

@verge

Absolutely charming fellow.

@verge
Are any of the people involved in this controversy over building a data center in Shelbyville, Indiana, wearing an onion on their belt right now?
@verge That's a born diplomat.
@verge shame it is paywalled
