Neocities is currently down, and this is what they posted on their Bluesky:

"We're working on the DNS outage. It's not technical - someone is trying to legally attack us and Namecheap took down the domain. More details later."

Update: There are more news: https://bsky.app/profile/neocities.org/post/3mnkqgxostk2k

Summary: this is all a very weird mix-up, not an attack against Neocities, and both Neocities and the not-actually-attacker are trying to get Namecheap to fix it.

Update 2: Neocities is back up!

Neocities (@neocities.org)

We're working on the DNS outage. It's not technical - someone is trying to legally attack us and Namecheap took down the domain. More details later.

@LeGaosaure

@dan pointed out that you can still access Neocities by editing the "hosts" file on your computer.

Locate the file in c:/windows/system32/drivers/etc.Put Neocities' IP and domain in the hosts file like so:

198.51.233.1 neocities.org

Unfortunately, to access Neocities-hosted websites you need to put each subdomain there too. But if you just need to backup your own site, this should do it.

Warning: remove this line when Neocities resolves this issue.

#IndieWeb #SmallWeb

If you want to access my website, put this in the hosts file:

198.51.233.1 poesu.neocities.org

;^)

@LeGaosaure dang good to know namecheap sucks
@angelfeast Yeah I think my eyes grew more and more as I read the thread, this is just. What. What even is this. What the hecking flying fuck.
@LeGaosaure thank you for the updates!
