Our local leather guild was provided finished fish leather from ICTYOS and given the challenge of creating an original leather product from the material. They are small hides so they are perfect for wallets or accenting other goods but I didn't want to do what everyone else is likely to do so I came up with this. It's a little loud but not too bad considering I had a train to catch so I just grabbed the first piece of leather I saw. #FishLeather #Maker #games #ICTYOS #LeatherCraft #Fish
I made an add on just because I had a little extra leather and tiny playing cards. #FishLeather #LeatherCraft #games #maker #leather #tiny #fun
I guess a lot of people had problems working with the fish leather and some ruined their samples. Now I wonder if maybe I didn't attempt something hard enough. I have customers and stuff. I don't have time to spend a week on an optional project.
(I didn't find it difficult. The best thing about fish leather is its tensile strength is far superior to any other leather I have ever worked with. You can stitch really close to the edge and not worry about the stitching ripping through.)
@DevlinLeathercraft have you considered that you might be very good at this?
@Brodyberg No but you made me laugh. :)
I probably should have a little more confidence given people seem to like my stuff and pay me for it. You make a good point and I should work on that.

@DevlinLeathercraft

Out of curiosity, have you had any experience with lionfish leather? If so, how does it compare?

@jgamble I have not but as I understand it, the features are the same. Fish hide is stronger than cow, goat and sheep because of the way the skin grows. Though it's very thin, I would not hesitate to use it without a lining for something that does not require a lining. It's a perfect solution for any product where thinness is an asset, as long as it doesn't require stiffness/structure.
@DevlinLeathercraft I never knew that fish leather was a thing before you shared your project. This looks really cool 😎
@Kitty Thank you! I hadn't either until a few months ago. It's gaining popularity because it's more sustainable. This company is trying to encourage our business but really it's just making me want to learn how to tan fish leather.
