Asiye’s Story is a book published in Turkey in 1999—the story of a woman who was raped in prison, the story of a woman who broke her silence.
This book sparked a movement against sexual torture in prisons because it held the rapists accountable. Because it gave the victims the courage to fight back against their torturers.
Why are we organizing this reading tour now, nearly 30 years after the publication of Asiye’s Story?
In recent months, we have seen numerous reports of rape and sexual torture—in prisons, during police operations, or at demonstrations.
These reports were only made public because women raised their voices, because they exposed the violence inflicted upon them.
Rape has long been a method used by oppressors to break resistance—a method that has been tabooed and kept secret.
