@s1m0n4 Do you travel on them ? As you remember perhaps. I worked on the nigh- trains in the restaurants. The couchettes were not expensive, the sleepers, with bed and washing-facilities were . Most now are expensive too.
Flying from Amsterdam to Vienna is still half-price compared with train, for example.
But Amsterdam had not many international trains left some years ago.
Nice to see there are more again now.

@hanktank6 we're travelling this summer for the first time from Brussels 🇧🇪 to Vienna 🇦🇹 .

For a family of 4 during peak season it's not the most expensive option. Moreover you can factor in the night that you won't spend at a hotel. The night train leaves in the evening and arrives in the morning, allowing travellers to enjoy the full day at a given destination. It's not the case for planes, often arriving in the evening or late afternoon.

@s1m0n4 An old saying: When traveling with family or friends, nothing beats the train. If there is a restaurant too, it is perfect.Allowing for the fact it is prepared food 😉. One #kdrama -poster here is a very frequent train- traveller between Holland and Italy and other areas. I dare not mention her name here. 🙂. Like another person stated :" All the stress with going by car, or admiring the Alps from your table , enjoying a glass of wine meanwhile?"
Vienna is on our wishlist by train btw.
@s1m0n4 We just came back from 2 weeks in the North of the UK . With rental-car by ferry. Do other short journeys by train, got rid of the car 13 years ago.
Now decided to look for using train fully.
One of my colleagues spends whole winters calculating train- journeys with her husband.
They are both 83, trips are 6 weeks, mainly Italy and in between.
Not in our budget, but inspiring enough.

@hanktank61 we don't own a car either. We've been subscribed to a car sharing service for 14 years (mainly for vacations, errands, family gatherings, etc).

The plane is getting more expensive every year and, due to school calendar, we can't go on vacation when it's cheap.
The night train is an ecological and affordable alternative. Having almost disappeared with Covid-19, now it's luckily coming back.

We won't stay in Vienna, we're heading to Slovenia 🇸🇮 for the European Juggling Convention.
