#Today 06

Good day!

June 6th 1944.

D-Day.

The day the Allies, including American soldiers, landed in Normandy, France to begin the liberation of Europe.

You know, to stop the Nazis after years of war and the people of Europe suffering at the hands of a crazed dictator.

Be everwell.

@CA_Hawthorne Probably time for us to do the same for America.

@CA_Hawthorne

On this day my father was on a floating huge hollow concrete block, with 1 other seaman, being towed to the waters off Arromanche where on the 7th they would sink said block as a breakwater for the Mulberry Harbour.

@Thebratdragon Wow! That’s more than I knew about that. I knew, in a general sense, about those efforts, which were critical for the long term.

@CA_Hawthorne

It is fascinating, even without the family connection, the sheer level of engineering involved!

And I am/was very proud of my dad.

@Thebratdragon You should be. He served in a righteous war.

@CA_Hawthorne

now we just have our own crazed dictator and 42% of the country think that's fine

@CA_Hawthorne I recently saw the new film "Pressure" about the role meteorology played in planning the invasion at Normandy. Highly recommend for its meteorological geekiness and a part of military planning I never gave much thought to.

Oh, yeah, and the US is cooperating with European allies. Well, sort of. They're arguing about strategy, but all on the same side.

@Karen5Lund I’ll see it eventually. Thank you for the recommendation.

There were a lot of moving parts involved with the invasion, including delaying a day and facing a lot of risk on the 6th. No satellite info! It remains the largest invasion ever executed.

How quickly people forget, or are encouraged to forget. I wasn’t born until many years later, but I’ll never cease to note the anniversary.
