It's about time I get a newsletter from MapBox. Oh man - the days of 2013 when Mapbox was all the rage.

@rjhale1971 Mapbox was all the rage. Mapbox was cool. But we were also cool, or at least aspired to be cool. I know I did.

A lot has changed since then.

@AtanasE We were cool. We had these new things called openstreetmap, twitter, and a whole host of open source tools....boundless....... Here we are - the old jaded people.
@rjhale1971 @AtanasE Remember when OpenGeo was renamed to Boundless? Remember when ESRI became Esri? Remember when Randal Hale used to post all those "Holy crap!" photos?
@kgjenkins @rjhale1971 Remember #geoglobaldomination ? Remember #geobeers ? Those were the days. Full of camaraderie and excitement.
@AtanasE @kgjenkins you know - that was a great time for community. There was a spot for everyone.

@rjhale1971 @AtanasE @kgjenkins

i stood at a conference in 2019 and said a bunch of stuff about this.

Unfortunately I was proven wrong :(

@adamsteer @rjhale1971 @AtanasE @kgjenkins

Back when I was big in Japan, Mapbox swag was cool, and they had a skateboard rack in their office

@spara @adamsteer @AtanasE @kgjenkins Gunderson once gave me the side eye because I sucked as the openstreetmap us treasurer.

@rjhale1971 @spara @AtanasE @kgjenkins

I don't know who Gunderson is, but getting a side eye from any of the big talking heads is worth some kind of award :)

(maybe I'm seen as a big talking head. That'd be weird since I've been fenced out of geo-anything for so long...)

@EvenRouault @adamsteer @rjhale1971 @AtanasE @kgjenkins

I met Eric back when he was running Development Seed from a Washington, DC, condominium that was once a brothel run by an infamous DC madam. Eric had a hilarious story about alligator hunting.

@adamsteer

Gundersen is Mapbox CEO.

As for side eye, definitely @IvanSanchez should get an award for being banned to use their maps for the glorious what3fucks location service a few years ago ๐Ÿคญ

BTW archive.org copy still works, yay JavaScript

@rjhale1971 @spara @AtanasE @kgjenkins

What๐Ÿ–•3๐Ÿ–•Fucks

@jorgesanz @adamsteer @IvanSanchez @rjhale1971 @spara @AtanasE @kgjenkins So earger that W3W finally collapses as part of the whole AI bubble burst so what3fucks can be ressurected!

@EvenRouault @jorgesanz @IvanSanchez @rjhale1971 @spara @AtanasE @kgjenkins

ai distorts the system too much! Every data centre is located at fucking.arselicker.bullshit, so it's hard to reliably get a fix on where exactly things are...

@EvenRouault

domain is still registered at a Spanish popular provider if I'm not mistaken ๐Ÿ‘€

@adamsteer @IvanSanchez @rjhale1971 @spara @AtanasE @kgjenkins

@jorgesanz

I'd definitely vote for @IvanSanchez in a side eye award.

And everyone in this chat :) @rjhale1971 @spara @AtanasE @kgjenkins

@AtanasE @kgjenkins @rjhale1971

You do realize all of that is still happening, yes?

This week for example I Was in Dublin ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช It was great fun

Geomob (@[email protected])

Attached: 4 images It was a very enjoyable evening last night for the first Geomob Dublin, thanks to everyone who came along. Thank you to Jenny Allen @[email protected] and Dermot McNally for organizing, Digital Hub for hosting us, and OGC and OpenCage @[email protected] for sponsoring ๐Ÿ™ Here's our recap of the night. #geomobDUB 1/

@freyfogle @AtanasE @rjhale1971 Congrats! Keep on keepin' on!

out of the blue @swarmapp has started bombarding me with "Come back to Placemaker Tools" emails. ah, the glorious days of being mayor of obscure art projects and fire hydrants all over the world. do you suppose they finally figured out that alienating their users leads to stale location data?

I was going to reminisce about Gowalla closing in 2012 but in trying to remember their name Wikipedia tells me they relaunched in 2023!?

@kgjenkins @freyfogle @AtanasE @rjhale1971

@freyfogle @kgjenkins @rjhale1971 I do realize this is still happening, and I do follow geomob and live vicariously through your meetups.
@AtanasE @kgjenkins @rjhale1971 make it a goal to come attend an event
@freyfogle @kgjenkins @rjhale1971 It is a goal of mine, although not within easy reach, given the distances
@kgjenkins @rjhale1971 @AtanasE why not organise a Geomob in your area? Itโ€™s fun, itโ€™s easy and we can help you with tips and guidelines @freyfogle
@stevenfeldman @kgjenkins @rjhale1971 @freyfogle I may, after I retire. Or maybe start a Geomob subsidiary -- GeoOldPharts ?
@kgjenkins @rjhale1971 @freyfogle @AtanasE I doubt you are in the >75 group

@stevenfeldman @kgjenkins @rjhale1971 @freyfogle I went for my regularly-scheduled physical today. The nurse asked me a battery of standard questions, among them whether I've had a recent fall, and whether I am depressed. They never asked this when I was 20.

I am positive that qualifies me for a #GeoOldPhart.

@AtanasE @stevenfeldman @kgjenkins @rjhale1971 no, Atanas. Once a geohipster, always a geohipster

@AtanasE

#geoGlobalDomination @IvanSanchez excellent musical performance and OpenGeo rename happened both at FOSS4G Denver in 2011. I attended a pretty bad GeoNode workshop (Instead of going to a football game, shame on me). I had 5 talks to deliver, and a colleague from Chile had an appendicitis surgery between SoTM and FOSS4G.

I mean, it was quite an event ๐Ÿคฃ

@kgjenkins @rjhale1971

@kgjenkins @AtanasE I even remember when you started your geohipster interview. Hah.
