ios autocorrecting capitalisation of brand names feels abusive

@fasterandworse every time I talk about emacs, an editor macOS ships with, it decides I must want to talk about eMacs, a product line Apple abandoned

if I want to talk about eating apples, it’s up to whatever unreliable sentiment detection is running on my phone whether or not that’s capitalized

do I want to talk about app stores? that’s a brand name, how dare I use it generically

@fasterandworse some of them are fucking confusing: Home Screen

Apple you didn’t invent the concept of a home screen on a phone. you didn’t even call it that initially

@fasterandworse am I going to talk about Mac & cheese? well best go back and correct the capitalization cause my phone doesn’t have behavior to do that for one of the most common recipes in the US

@fasterandworse apple employees love to call me emotionally dysregulated when I point out concrete issues with their company’s products but really I’m mostly just done. this crap’s been broken for over a decade and it only gets worse, not better, and users have no ability to change or fix any of it, on purpose

I came to the ecosystem cause I wanted a good UI on top of a stable Unix system and macOS is neither of those anymore. iOS used to be better than Android and it just isn’t now.

@fasterandworse am I supposed to not take my business elsewhere? linux and grapheneOS are just a better deal for me at this point on a system that’ll piss me off less

shouldn’t that be fucking embarrassing for Apple? it must be as they’ve just fired Cook, but there’s still so many guys on here who’ll call you a sociopath for pointing out that maybe apple’s just doing bad and maybe they shouldn’t be supported. maybe advocacy should be saved for things that are good.

@zzt @fasterandworse

I don't know what logic Android uses to pick what Words to capitalize, it seems Utterly Random.

@resuna
I've been enjoying Android's unreliable caps button lately. If i want to capitalize the first letter of a word there is a fifty percent chance the entire word will be capitalized instead. And if it thinks it's found a common phrase and i manually override its selection to select only a portion of that phrase to edit? No i didn't because it's all gone now

@RnDanger

#Gboard is definitely getting less reliable. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the move to GenAI coding.

I've configured Gboard to use all the languages I regularly write in. Every so often, glide-type will randomly shift from English into French or, occasionally, German, even though English is still the highlighted choice on the language chooser.

Sometimes I can't send a toot or a Signal message without manually dismissing the keyboard: the Send button just does nothing.

Sometimes I can't delete the first few letters of a search term until I've typed another letter.

These bugs are all very visible. I wonder what's going on in the depths of #Android that I can't see.

@resuna @zzt @fasterandworse

@CppGuy @RnDanger @resuna @fasterandworse this discussion of the problems with a proprietary keyboard and dictionary I don’t and won’t use on android isn’t particularly interesting to me or relevant to anything I said. you can’t change how the autocorrect on iOS works at all other than with tedious hacks.

kindly untag me from this subthread, thanks
