Cloudflare's CEO: "How I Choose Which Cloudflare Employees to Replace With AI" https://www.wsj.com/opinion/how-i-choose-which-cloudflare-employees-to-replace-with-ai-40a197e5?st=JGJffd&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink

Straight up bragging about it

> AI isn’t the harbinger of bleak youth unemployment—it is quite the opposite.

orly

> We received almost a million applicants for 1,111 paid internships this summer.

Oh approximately one thousand applications per *internship*

Yeah I'm sure the youth unemployment situation is doing great then?

What a bunch of bullshit

Cloudflare is the worst fucking company, every week they do something that makes me despise them more

@cwebber "haha yes we own the entire internet isn't that cool :)"
@cwebber Not that I needed any further backing for this talking point but.... the disconnect is strong in techbros.

@cwebber
> to understand the change happening i read a book from the 50s

i mean i tried to read it but this is fully fucking insane.

@cwebber

AI isn’t the harbinger of bleak youth unemployment—it is quite the opposite.if this came from the Onion it would be hilarious. Unfortunately this is a disgusting ghoul.

@cwebber educate me! I’m an old school Cloudflare fan but like all tech companies, I’m not surprised if they became corrupted or otherwise unethical. Just not up to date.
@treefifty @cwebber I kinda guessed this would have been Matthew Prince. Well, for what it's worth, some interesting technological approaches are parked in CF for the moment. Can't say I like the way this is going though...
@treefifty @cwebber they've been off in the shitter for years. kiwifarms hid behind them for a loooooong time, as an example

@cwebber
So, he's firing all the "measurers" and then goes on to say...

"...as CEO, I’ve never had better tools to measure..."

Executive, fire thyself.

@jargoggles @cwebber now he has all his best AI measurers that will tell him that all the indicators are green, everything is super great.
@cwebber I will never forgive them for defending f***ing ****farms.
@cwebber What IP addresses or domains do Cloudflare own so I can add them to my uBlock list?

@mast0d0nphan they publish the list of subnets, but blocking them would break...imo too much
Russian government is blocking them, and it's one of the most disastrous blocks they ever did

IP Ranges

This page is intended to be the definitive source of Cloudflare’s current IP ranges.

@cwebber People were pointing out how they hired the same number of interns as people they just fired, saying they're replacing seniors with interns. Now the CEO is explicitly confirming that as a brag in the Wall Street Journal.
@cwebber as a college student currently trying very hard to find internships and failing, this is very distressing to read. Hadn't realized the applicant density was quite that high...
@cwebber I'm thinking about applying to Harvard, because right now my chances of getting into an elite Ivy League school are better than the chances of my resume getting past AI gatekeepers and into human hands
@cwebber It's had to make my opinion of that company any lower, and yet, they've managed to.

@cwebber

Wait, did he really just trim down internal audit and replace a bunch of that function with AI? Well now that's certainly going to have no foreseen repercussions in spending controls at all.

@cwebber young people are going to have to make a living outside of the corporate world out of pure necessity
@cwebber
> Two weeks ago I laid off more than 20% of my workforce. I didn’t do it because Cloudflare is struggling. We posted record revenue growth, have strong free cash flow and are adding an unprecedented number of customers around the world. I did it because
@screwlisp @cwebber translation: the company is struggling, we are expecting an economic crisis and we are firing people premptively

@cwebber and you want a medal you fucking piece of inhuman trash?

Maybe a FIFA prize for the smartest and kindest CEO on the planet, who succeeded to innovate in the HR department?

Imagine that? The only company to do that? What a precursor!

@cwebber Dear god. I interviewed with them in 2022 and it was such a terrible process that I noped out after three rounds (of six!! Six rounds AND a practical test! Come on…) and I’ve never been more glad.
