Just mildly disassembling this G4 Cube and it’s impressive.

Sadly it looks like enough parts on this are missing that it’s not easily usable. Would sure love to Mac OS 9 again.

Oh, hey!
It was on this day May 6th, in 1998 that Apple launched the iMac in a world of beige that turned around the company.

The power button on this Cube is a light capacitive touch sensor that is able to detect touch through the thick plastic top.

The internal block has an impressive clamp to attach itself to the top vent piece.

@Luke That would make a neat fish bowl.

@Presstype oh that’s a cool idea. Feed ‘em through the vent!

I ended up wondering why I was keeping this last night during this process. I suppose I just need to sort through the cool crap I’ve gathered over 26 years.
Watched some cool ideas on YouTube and then just sighed.
Like, my kids love old computers now! What?

@Presstype @Luke perfect for a Betta

@Jargoonco @Presstype lol, that idea’s a solid goldfish.
Okay, I’m horrible at this game.

What relics do we put in the sand below? A vintage Mac with a pirate flag coming out of it?

@Luke @Presstype Apple isn’t big on pirated software…

Maybe a tiny iMac that releases bubbles like an aquarium treasure chest would…

(I’m sorry, I could not help the Beta/Betta joke)

@Jargoonco @Presstype brilliant. Perhaps the iMac has the flying toasters screensaver running?
@Luke @Jargoonco why flying toasters when there were fish?

After Dark 2.0x - Fish!

@Presstype @Jargoonco brillianter! For a second I thought that link was to an actual screensaver which, wow, now I have to search for one.
@Luke @Jargoonco This is becoming an After Dark thread, I had totally forgotten about this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6sG5JaAM3Y
Software used to be fun.
After Dark Screen Saver: Bungee Roulette

@Presstype @Luke I am here for it. I have never seen this one! The sounds! I only ever had the flying toasters, which I obsessively loved. I agree, software used to be fun. I know it is hard to be hopeful some days but I harbour hope that maybe it can pendulum swing back that way. I demand more whimsy from technology.
@Luke it feels like you could put the new mini internals into the lexan sheath.

@octothorpe one video was of a person putting the Mac mini — likely a descendant to the Cube — inside the Cube and it worked well, with the CD toaster feature working, too.

This is a rabbit hole. I’m cautious about those.

@Luke doooooo iiiiiiiiiiit. Rabbit holes are the best!

(I am also a terrible person).

@Luke I've got one of these (collecting dust on the shelf) always loved the aesthetic when it came out … still on the list is the original clamshell iBook. Missed out on getting one when the all white ones came out, as got that instead.
@sturobson oh, I did like those, too!
This is so cool. Not scratch resistant, but very cool.
This has been sitting in the corner hidden for many years. 🥹
