This is not a drill.

On the collapse of unipolar power relations, forming of new alliances & paths for a way forward.

My take? White colonial hegemony is over. Religious nationalism & patriarchal supremacy are flourishing. As successive iterations of climate catastrophe bite, borders will harden further. Any social licence to do this rests on normalising the ‘othering’ of people who are ‘not like (the men who rule) us’. Cultivating hate IS, & will continue to be, the strategy.

What role does Australia choose to play here? Whose interests does our (two party roundabout, media enthralled, policy avoidant, team-sport-distraction running 🎪🤡🎡) government exist to serve? (Hint is in the brackets ⛏️ ⛏️ ⛏️ 😎)

What role do we choose to play, as people? For me, refusing to get sucked into black & white narratives & the demonisation of others, is the start.

Your take may be different from mine & that’s fine - but we’re all in this together. Let’s pay attention, friends.

Who do we want to be?

Hope out of chaos: how the dark era of Trump is creating a new approach to global politics

There is cautious optimism that ‘a majority of multilateralists’ may be able to enduringly reshape global alliances

“…refusing to get sucked into black & white narratives & the demonisation of others…”.

Agreed, that is where we ought to start. And #CriticalThinkingSkills is the tool to do it with. Which I though was the the main teaching point of any #Education system. Yet, though with more people ‘better educated’ than ever before, what has happened? The goto answer seems to be that education has failed us. If so, we should be looking at causes and reasons.

The sad thing about this train of thought is that any rethinking of education is generational change(s). Ergo, Several generations have already ‘missed the boat’ and more will as well. How many? A century’s worth? More?

The only light in the tunnel IMO (if there is one to see atm) might be an imminent total collapse of regimes and social contracts, with global economic collapse, the four horsemen IOW. Nothing pleasant for the mid to long term future then…

Dog, so depressing… I’m going back to bed.

@RaymondPierreL3 Agree, critical thinking skills are our protection & the defunding of the disciplines where we learned these is not accidental. Maybe we all need to learn how to pass on the skills we have - which would start, I am guessing, with being willing to take the time to listen without correcting, so we can begin from where the person we’re talking to actually is. Teachers know how to do this! I am impatient & need to practice.

@26pglt
Teachers (under the pump) and parents (also under the pump) both…

Thinking out loud… there ought to be a licence to have children IMO. So many arguably adults are simply not up to the task.

@RaymondPierreL3 I know I was not. Undiagnosed autistic woman - raised by undiagnosed autistic mother in a multiply neurodivergent family - raising undiagnosed autistic kids is not parenting 101. 🙈
@26pglt
Wow, talk about how hard it must be to ‘conform’ to ‘expected’ social behavioural ‘norms’. I can’t begin to truly understand how hard that must be for neurodivergent individuals. I’m sorry our society makes it so… some of the brightest individuals I have known are neurodivergent and sidelining them, as our society currently is want to do, is to our greater loss I think.
@RaymondPierreL3 🙏 for kind comment. There’s so many of us went through this as undx neurodivergent kids & parents. In my experience finding ways to understand our difficulties kindly - & those of our parents, & our kids - is what breaks the generational cycle of parenting trauma.
@26pglt My feeling is that the scale of climate change is going to make it impossible to maintain borders. There will just be two many people needing to move or die.

@Ooze this is why the ‘climate change denialist’ right has been priming us for closed borders for years. The evidence has been in for ages. Like the insurance industry, they Know.

I fear many people will die ❤️‍🩹
