@steelman @goetz Pick whichever semantics would suit your use-case. If it's important to derive meaning from your IP addresses -- a fairly uncommon requirement -- then sure, don't use the A-F hex digits. The IPv6 network behavior will not be any different.
Insofar as the network is concerned, there would also be no issue if only ASCII bytes were encoded within the IID, so that hexdumps of the packet would spell out funny strings. Some programmers can read ASCII natively.
