At CMU, he co-wrote the Mach microkernel before getting hired at NeXT, and GNU Hurd is based on Mach.

Avadis "Avie" Tevanian, Jr. (born 1961) was the Chief Software Technology Officer at Apple Computer. He was also a member of the board of embedded software tools company Green Hills Software. Avie Tevanian received his B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Rochester, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from Carnegie-Mellon University.
