@Steve12L Ah! reading this made me look for news about Avie Tevanian... I found a quite interesting and recent interview (2018) https://apple.fandom.com/wiki/Avie_Tevanian#Career
At CMU, he co-wrote the Mach microkernel before getting hired at NeXT, and GNU Hurd is based on Mach.
