Hey btw for #Bitwig users, in this week’s blog I bothered to explain how I use stock devices to trim competing low-end frequencies out of a bassline when a kick drum kicks… it’s really simple to make a dynamic EQ imo and I find it so useful I figure it’s worth drawing attention to it. It’s just classic sidechain stuff but more subtle than just turning down the whole sound (ducking).
I may as well lay it out here too:
* Add an EQ+ to the track you want to trim frequencies from, and add a band to it, probably either a shelf or a notch
* Add an Audio Sidechain to the EQ+ and choose the relevant source, eg. the out of your kick drum
* Adjust the high and low pass filters on the Audio Sidechain so the same frequency range you want to cut is coming through
* Use that Audio Sidechain to modulate either the frequency of your low shelf or the gain of your notch
* Tweak Audio Sidechain gain and/or modulation amounts to taste
