Great replacement theorist and wanted war criminal #Netanyahu, at Yad Vashem: “Europe is infected with deep moral weakness”

Netanyahu spoke at the opening ceremony of Holocaust Remembrance Day at Yad Vashem, saying that “in the Holocaust we were a beaten animal letting out a cry of agony - and today we have a state stronger than ever, letting out a roar of power.” He then leveled sharp criticism at European states, saying that “Europe has forgotten so many things since the Holocaust. It, which swore after World War II to protect the good, is today infected with deep moral weakness. Losing control of its identity, its values, its commitment to protect civilization from barbarism.”

Who’s the barbarian?

The #ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu on 21 November 2024, charging him with the war crimes of starvation as a method of warfare and intentionally directing attacks against the civilian population, and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts, covering conduct from at least 8 October 2023.

As of April 1, 2026, nearly 72,300 Palestinians have been directly killed, with over 172,000 recorded injuries. Scholars estimate 80% of Palestinians killed were civilians, and a UN human rights study found that 70% of those killed in residential buildings were women and children.

The framing is very specific: it positions Israel as the defender of civilization against barbarism, which is a rhetorical move with a long colonial genealogy (the same logic used to justify virtually every atrocity committed by Western powers against non-Western populations.) The same logic the Germans (yes the same Germans now holding the EU back from forcing Israel to stop the ongoing genocide in Gaza, and ethnic cleansing of the West Bank and south of Lebanon) used to justify their own civilizational war.

I don’t think I heard Netanyahu speaking fluent Nazi before. It’s like he decided he might as well let the mask drop.

Quoting Prof. Dmitry Shumsky:

The memory of the Holocaust commands us to resist the turning of the state of the Jews into a state of executioners.

[...] In recent years, given the processes of "barbarization" and "Kahanization" of Israeli society, which The Democrats party chairman Yair Golan warned about exactly a decade ago, the feelings of nausea and pain that flood me anew every Holocaust Remembrance Day are becoming harder to bear. I am not a religious person, but I imagine that what I feel toward a state that perceives itself as the answer to the #Holocaust of the Jewish people, while potentially soon turning the gallows into its national symbol, is what a believing Jew might feel seeing a pig's head in his neighborhood synagogue.

@oatmeal He’s been saying stuff like this for a long time. The Kahanists have been deploying anti-Semitic tropes against diaspora Jews and even Holocaust victims for a decade or more. You didn’t notice before because you didn’t pay attention to Israeli politics before 2023.
