Happy 20th birthday, .eu!

Over the past 20 years, the .eu top-level domain has become a milestone for Europe’s digital identity.

Today, it counts over 3.8 million registrations, making it the ninth-largest country-code top-level domain worldwide.

@HennaVirkkunen When .eu was created, 5"1/4 floppy disks were already obsolete :-)
@bortzmeyer @HennaVirkkunen my first thought as well, that computer is a lot older than 20 years 🙂

@HennaVirkkunen I'm feeling a bit old right now 😅

But I can still remember waiting for the registration to open. It already felt significant back then, and 20 years later, it still does.

@HennaVirkkunen I probably should finally move the domain to a European registrar. That's my to-do until the next #DID.

@HennaVirkkunen Life is good at the top…level domain; 🦋 https://www.smetterling.eu

Shameless, I know.

@HennaVirkkunen ah yeah what a great milestone of cross-border collaboration and identity when ~300'000 UK holders' domains were disowned with less than a year's notice

Edit: just looked at the user profile. They're not on Mastodon, they're just mirroring their RSS feed here. Zero replies to anyone, just promoting their own content

@HennaVirkkunen If it really only has 3.8M registrations, I highly doubt it’s the 9th-largest ccTLD…
