ah, mix tapes, burning cds, so what is the modern equivalent of this? people sending spotify/youtube playlists?
@djlink Putting tape over the holes on a cassette tape so that you can record over it. Pressing record when the song you want comes on the radio. Handwritten labels. Those were the hands on times.
@thesailordev @djlink using a pencil to rewind a cassette that had got gnawed!!!
@patrickhadfield @thesailordev @djlink Literal cutting and pasting of wrecked tape segments
@djlink @mewsleah I think the youths actually start conversations with people they want to date
@djlink Fire? It wasn't the middle ages, we had lasers!
@barnesmaurice @djlink
Well, some of you did. ;)

@djlink I'm confused...why did Chloe have follow-up questions for the internet, but not her cousin, who, presumably, could have cleared up all the misunderstanding directly?

But then, if this is a misunderstanding, why put 'burn' in quotation marks? It implies Chloe did in fact understand the whole time and now I just don't know what to think about any of this.

@4Dboy @djlink Thank you, your analysis has saved my sanity. I believe you are correct. It was contrived for effect.

Whew. That's a load off.

@4Dboy @djlink She surely understood but wanted to get reactions. Bit I’m sad there was no mention of lasers. We weren’t using some old fire, but burn them with cool lasers.

@antopatriarca @djlink i fear you may be right. What has become of the internet? *Sigh*.

Agreed though, everything is at least 16% cooler with lasers.

@4Dboy

To be fair, more correct use of quotation marks than most.

I would say that she has guessed that burn doesn't mean burn the whole CD, but doesn't know what it does mean.
In answer to her questions:
- was it like a ritual? Yes.
- did it work? If you did the ritual right, yes, sometimes.
@4Dboy @djlink
@djlink yup, it's not even that recent a phenomenon, 15y ago i made and shared spoti playlists with my exes already

@djlink Please tell me this post is fake.

Please...

I'm begging you......

EDIT: Whew. It's fake.

@djlink Burning the planet with playlists full of AI slop songs?

@djlink This cannot be serious right now

Nero laughs

@djlink standing outside their house blasting Tay Tay from their phone over a Bluetooth speaker?
@djlink Wait till she learns that later on DVDs was burned too.
@djlink πŸ˜† πŸ˜‚ 🀣
@djlink Collaborative, endless playlists. Actually kinda cool!
@djlink Just because I'm going to be 40 next year doesn't make me an old caveman 😭
@djlink mmm those CDs keep generating loads of paranoia as it seems...

@djlink

Funny thing about this post:

In an episode of "Lost Girl" Bo (a fae succubus) and Kenzi (her adorable criminal BFF) return to Bo's hometown to see her adopted mother, only to find that an evil spirit is murdering people.

They also find that a redneck ex-goth and some friends conjured that evil spirit with black magic, and one of the things they did to complete the ritual was set a CD of "Antichrist Superstar" by Marilyn Manson on fire.

@djlink vinyl cuts were the worst, they wouldn't understand anyway.

@djlink
I don't know what modern equivalent is other than playlists for self.
We never pirated or shared mix tapes or CDs.
We only made Audio CDs of our own recordings.

We did experiment with making Video CDs for a while (from live recorded tapes or Off air), but DVDs made those obsolete.

I made some mix Minidiscs, not to be confused with 8cm CDs (AKA mini CDs).

@djlink The burning of the sacred discs provided the music of the beforetimes, while the screams of the machine carried the knowledge, and we used high-energy electron beams to feed the information directly into our brains through our eye sockets.
@djlink I’ll never tell. (quickly hiding ancient 45)

@djlink Creating shared playlists on Spotify... which the crush can delete whenever they need "boundaries".

I think the point is that we live in an age where we can just delete memories and big parts of our lives when it makes us uncomortable instead of holding place for people and times that make up our lives. Discomfort is part of growing.

@djlink The perfect setup to say, "With lasers," and instead he decides to go for the gnostic priesthood thing.

I bet he doesn't even know.

Lasers. We burned them with lasers.

@djlink

ah, burning CDs. the mating ritual.

just like burning their favorite hoodie or flannel shirt on breakup. or was that just me? :)

@djlink The modern equivalent? You don't have a human crush but talk love to a LLM which you prompt to add songs to your playlist.

#modernTimes #VeryDarkCynism

@djlink not gonna lie, I kinda want to do, despite being born in 2002, but I'm not sure, how many would be able to play them...

@djlink

I connected to the Razorback II server with my Emule client for my crush.

No Zoomer will understand it 😁

@djlink

What do they mean "used to"? I'm not giving my money to a streaming service that advertises for ICE. Bring on the burning!

@djlink USB sticks. Then, after you break up, she can erase it and put gamesaves on it.
@the_turtle @djlink Truly a thoughtful gift. Great idea!
@djlink Behold...THE SPINDLE!!!

@djlink

The technique actually goes back to the Romans. Nero did already burn ROM(e)

(yes, it was a German company, hence Rom instead of Rome or Roma)

@djlink Pirate witches must never be spoken.

@djlink I don't think there is any modern equivalent because nothing takes the passion and devotion of making anything now that a mixtape took back in the day.

Making a playlist takes five minutes.

@djlink uploading a dj set on soundcloud
@djlink my partner and I basically live in separate music bubbles. Everything is so curated to your specific niche that besides the odd pop hit, there is no semblance of common ground to even entertain sharing a playlist. We’ve been together for over a decade and this is seriously *the* biggest issue, a refusal of compromise over opening up to either of our disparate tastes
@djlink Hosted playlists where some of the items might magically disappear later in the future (never mind that you can also skip them at will) are...sadly not remotely similar to mix tapes
@djlink With the way prices are going, I think it'll soon be a username/password to a Navidrome server.
@djlink Fire was only used with Nickelback CDs, and only to destroy them.
@djlink
I've considered sending a playlist on a thumb drive. I'm fairly old, though, so probably don't count 😁
@djlink this is so funny? this make me laugh so much. Thanks 😁

@djlink These things are NOT DEAD YET.

I burned three (data) DVDs a couple of weeks ago for my sister so that I could send her some large files.
