I am seeing more use of the #fediverse and #mastodon in my local area and hope to see it grow.

Sorting out the most effective #hashtags to use could help.

Home for me is #QualicumBeach but does #qualicum do the job?

There is more than one #parksville which may be why #ParksvilleBC is also used.

Both the more popular #vancouverisland and the more efficient #vanisle are in use. #Oceanside has uses.

Does #BC work or should we use #britishcolumbia?

Any thoughts? Are there others?

I’ve struggled with this also while setting up my news bots.

Given the international nature of the Fedi, I’ve landed on using $TownName + BC, as there are cases where the straight town name is pretty common (I.e. “Duncan”).

I also include the straight $TownName as there’s probably a good chance that newcomers to the Fedi likely would start there.

@fname Good points. I had not considered that the strategy needs to accommodate both groups.
@kgw I use #BC but I can’t remember if I’ve used #QualicumBeach or #QB before.

@kgw and on a related note, what hashtags are being used in the rest of British Columbia? I have used #BC and #bcpoli and #northernbc but maybe there are others people are using?

It would be nice if we could promote some standard British Columbia hashtags. One of the things that I really miss from old twitter was the ability to hone into emergency information, so if we had a standard format, it would be helpful.

For cyclists you’ll see an occasional #bikeyvr in #Vancouver

Not sure if there’s other regional variations
