would yall wear the elderly robot tail
@kaiiak not if i have to get elderly first.
@kaiiak looks expensive.

@OliviaVespera @kaiiak

Aren't all proper fursuits?

@stuartyeates @OliviaVespera @kaiiak I estimated p=1 that somebody mentioned the obvious community supporting this.
@kaiiak hello yes Japan it's me, the Elderly. i like buying houses at affordable prices and telling kids to get off my lawn

@kaiiak

Unless I can tail slam the shit out of somebody with it like godzilla

Wait can it

so when can the public get this

@marceline
It seems like it's just a prototype so probably not for a while. And even then it'll likely be a prescription type thing.

@kaiiak

@Draconic_NEO @marceline
It's only a matter of time before some nerd open sources the design and makes it 3d printable

@kaiiak
Kind of like those prosthetic hands which were promoted a while back? I forgot what they were called exactly but their whole thing was open source and 3d printable.

@marceline

@kaiiak is this real? can you buy this??

@uint8_t @kaiiak
it was a real prototype in sept 2024

EDIT: the youtube video linked in the article is from 2020. so this is probably how old this actually is.

Arque Robotic Human Tail designed to enhance our agility and balance

The Arque Human Robotic Tail designed to enhance our agility and balance has been developed by researchers at at Keio University in Japan

Geeky Gadgets
@uint8_t @kaiiak it is, but if its already in mass production and affortable is another question
@kaiiak As someone with cerebral palsy, some serious balance problems, a history of nasty tripping accidents and life-longe love with dinosaurs: HELL YES TAKE MY MONEY
@kaiiak i have trouble balancing now... can i have one?
@kaiiak Is that device also useful to make roller skate backwards fallings softer?
@cinnamon
*falls backwards on roller skates*
*VERY EXPENSIVE CRUNCH*
"NOOOO MY TAIL"
@kaiiak "My tail" (my backbone) is more expensive than any device
@kaiiak That looks pretty similar to astronaut tail concept (mechanical tail to position yourself in zero gravity, though it was designer student concept, so I am not sure if it would be effective)
@kaiiak In a heartbeat, and I'd never take it off!
@kaiiak without hesitation, but for two reasons
1: tail
2: I could actually use this for its intended purpose and quit using a cane
@kit
"this is my medically prescribed tail. doctors orders. yes the added fur is necessary. it makes it fluffy"
@kaiiak
Jonah J. Jameson and Mac Gargan approve this.
@kaiiak Furries have entered the chat.
@kaiiak a must have for many furries
@kaiiak wait that looks like that tail from that one early 2000's robot dino toy
@kaiiak Oh yes! Unfortunately, it's still a prototype that's rather different from the picture.
@kaiiak I expect wings to be created for the same purpose!
@kaiiak If anyone's wondering where this is from: https://dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1145/3306214.3338573

(no i dont know why it bubbled into science journalism in 2026)

@ClaireH @kaiiak I thought there may be a video, and found this:

@kaiiak

Hell yes AND add a taser-tip. Or flashing LED panels for each segment.

@kaiiak A.) yes if it worked, B.) it better have a curled up mode for the bus, because if you are elderly enough for this you probably aren't driving. And I would think this would be impossible with a car. Possible but weird with a bike, but if it helped enough for the elderly to ride, go for it.

The number of years between elderly enough to need a tail and too elderly to carry its weight? So like, 7 years? Nope, nobody is wearing this unless they really wanted to for none medical reasons.

@kaiiak If it comes with the complete velociraptor suit, absolutely.

@kaiiak

It requires power which requires weight (batteries) which means it probably wouldn't actually be good for the elderly.

Also, inside a home, it would be constantly knocking things over.

But I'm wondering if runners could run faster if they could lean forward more ... which they could do if they had a tail.

Hello Olympics?

@kaiiak I mean yeah if it was real. free tail.
@kaiiak I will give one to my grandpa. Will be Grandzilla
@kaiiak
Hell yeah! Balance!
@kaiiak HELL of a conversation starter, especially for women.

@kaiiak
bob showed visible discontempt :

  • wiggles wiggles *
@kaiiak *older voice* I am Godzilla!
@kaiiak balance is just the excuse they tell the public
@kaiiak
Think I'd rather keep my dignity.
@BlueDot @kaiiak L, im gonna wear the big waggy tail even if I dont need it

@kaiiak

One day I hope I too am old enough to medically require a synth tail,

@kaiiak I’m nearly 70 and fell recently on a hiking trail upon tripping, bruising my shoulder and thigh, and possibly breaking a pinkie finger. I hike about 5 miles almost daily and fall once every couple of years. Although this recent fall hurt and shook me up, I would rather risk falling again than wear a tail. I have a walking stick and don’t even carry it because of the inconvenience, but I might reconsider it at some point.

My cane says "this is actually my 4th leg". As a 48 year old, I'd absolutely trade the cane for this tail, and get a tattoo that says, "this is actually my 2nd tail". 🏳️‍⚧️

@kaiiak

@kaiiak

No. One pretty lady and it becomes a lethal weapon whipping from side to side.
