Sam probably has the lowest prey drive of any fox in the forest, and they also are probably the most self-conscious about it. I think Sam being nonbinary/agender in many ways mirrors their relationship with themself as a predator. Sam doesn't have anxiety about being a fox, it's not physical.

And Sam doesn't think of themself as prey, or get hung up on their own instincts - not really. What they have is more a desire to be able to not be part of the pred/prey classification at all. Sam wants the bunnies around them to think of them as... Sam. Just Sam.

Sam doesn't have the words to express that though, so its something that they have a lot of self-doubt and confusion about. I often talk about different foxes in the forest as being foils for each other. Vicky/Sadie are foils for Mal and Carol. But Sam's foil is another safe fox - Swallow.

Swallow is instinct, Sam is self-control. Swallow can't communicate but is always authentically himself. Sam is great at communication, but always masks/fronts. Sam is anxiety, self-doubt, and the vague discomfort that always lurks just beneath the surface like an itch that can't be scratched.

I go into more details on my gallery, but I won't subject you to an even longer thread <3 I usually draw Sam as "the adult in the room", so it's a lot of fun to give them an opportunity to be a bit more vulnerable. I really enjoy getting to explore their character more <3
