I have to dig up more composted soil because I'm out of potting soil for more food plant seeds sowing. Aiming to get more melons, some cucumbers & my bitter gourd seeds sowed, today! πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ

@PhoenixSerenity

The forecast is for above freezing all week, so I'm going to take a chance and sow some more seeds on Tuesday.

Worst case will be that I have to carry them in and out when cold nights or even days return. I don't have enough indoor light for more than the tomatoes and peppers I already have.

I'm all done, for today πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ
Very happy with all the new food plant seeds sowed today. Expect a ton of photos, in a few weeks, when my seeds sowed, start to sprout 😁

Just planted my bitter melon seeds yesterday, first time trying to grow them.
@ScottSchlueter Most excellent to hear! Where abouts are you in the world? I'm on Southern Vancouver Island & barely anyone grows bitter melons here. I'm growing them more commonly known, Vietnamese long variety. I haven't been able to acquire any seeds for the smaller, much more bitter Indian bitter melon. I'm going to Vancouver mainland for a day work trip soon & gonna try to squeeze in a meeting with BC Indian bitter melon growers! I hope to make that happen πŸ™
@PhoenixSerenity Southern Minnesota - Le Sueur - Bought Jyunpaku Okinawan Pure White seeds, and saved some from a locally sourced long green variety. So hopefully will have two types to put in the ground in about a month.
@ScottSchlueter let's keep each other updated on our first time experiments with trying to grow bitter gourds!

@PhoenixSerenity I'm gonna ask a dumb question as I'm seriously considering starting a small veggie garden this year.

For cucumbers, can I just use the seeds I get in the cucumbers from the grocery store? And if I do, can I just start them in the ground rather than a pot?

@somcak You can only do that if the cucumbers are not GMO/hybrid without germinating seeds. I recommend getting those cukes from farmer's market instead. Most big grocery stores don't sell cukes that germinate well - they're not very interested in more people being able to grow their own foods. You do better with growing stuff from grocery stores if they're root veggies or veggies like celery - foods that can grow from cuttings & not dependent on good seeds.
@PhoenixSerenity thank you!!
@somcak You're welcome πŸ’šπŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎπŸ’š
@somcak Also - I do not consider any questions as dumb questions, especially with gardening. If I can't provide answer, I'll try to help you find answers.
@PhoenixSerenity my squash!
@smellsofbikes Future food to eat πŸ’šβœŒοΈ
@PhoenixSerenity Future food we don't have to buy and nobody other than the wild rabbits can keep us from getting
@smellsofbikes Throw some chicken wire around your plants & rabbits will be less inclined to eat your food plants. I had to do that at previous places where rabbits & elk were an issue with food gardening management.
