Nel giorno in cui JD Vance fa ritorno negli Stati Uniti dopo il fallimento dei negoziati a Islamabad, Israele riprende a bombardare il sud del Libano, scontrandosi con gli islamisti filo iraniani di Hezbollah. E a Gerusalemme il ministro della Sicurezza Nazionale Itamar Ben Gvir ha pregato sul Monte del Tempio, sfidando le autorità arabe che amministrano il luogo di culto. “Oggi mi sento il padrone di casa“, ha dichiarato in un video, aggiungendo “continuo a sollecitare il primo ministro a fare sempre di più. Dobbiamo andare ancora oltre, sempre più in alto”. Lo scrive il Times of Israel. In base a un accordo consolidato, gli ebrei possono visitare il complesso, ma non pregarvi, poiché è amministrato dal Waqf giordano, un ente religioso musulmano. Ben Gvir rivendica da tempo il diritto di preghiera per gli ebrei sul sito e sue precedenti visite hanno suscitato aspre condanne nel mondo arabo.
A fine marzo Ben Gvir aveva festeggiato con brindisi e abbracci l’introduzione della pena di morte per i detenuti palestinesi nell’ordinamento israeliano. Le legge, criticata da tutte le principali organizzazioni per i diritti umani, è passata con con 62 voti a favore e 48 contrari. “Abbiamo fatto la storia. Lo avevamo promesso e lo abbiamo mantenuto. La legge sulla pena di morte per i terroristi è entrata a far parte dell’ordinamento giuridico dello Stato di Israele”, aveva scritto il ministro in veste di principale promotore del provvedimento. Già a novembre, dopo l’approvazione della legge in prima lettura, il ministro aveva offerto dolcetti a tutti i presenti.
La legge stabilisce che la pena di morte – mediante impiccagione – diventi la punizione per i palestinesi della Cisgiordania condannati per omicidi a sfondo nazionalistico. La legge conferisce inoltre ai tribunali israeliani l’autorità di infliggere sia la pena di morte, sia l’ergastolo anche ai cittadini israeliani.

And in Jerusalem, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir prayed on the Temple Mount, challenging Arab authorities who administer the holy site. “Today I feel like the landlord,” he declared in a video, adding, “I continue to urge the prime minister to do more. We must go even further, higher.” The Times of Israel reports this. According to a long-standing agreement, Jews can visit the compound, but not pray there, as it is administered by the Waqf Jordan, a Muslim religious body. Ben Gvir has long claimed the right to pray for Jews on the site, and previous visits have provoked harsh condemnations in the Arab world.

At the end of March, Ben Gvir celebrated the introduction of the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli legal system with toasts and hugs. The law, criticized by all major human rights organizations, passed with 62 votes in favor and 48 against. “We made history. We promised it and we kept it. The law on the death penalty for terrorists has become part of the legal system of the State of Israel,” the minister wrote as the main promoter of the legislation. Already in November, after the first reading of the law, the minister offered sweets to everyone present.

The law stipulates that the death penalty – by hanging – will become the punishment for Palestinians from the West Bank convicted of nationalist-motivated murders. The law also grants Israeli courts the authority to impose either the death penalty or life imprisonment, even on Israeli citizens.
