When I was a kid and my cousin had a Nintendo, the only way we could beat Contra was with the code. Around the turn of the century, I went back to it (with an emulator on a computer, but not using any cheats or save states) and was ultimately able to beat it.

Last year, I tried it again to see if it is as hard as I recalled. Without the code, I could make it past the waterfall before I ran out of lives. I like that level of difficulty.
