I watched a reaction to the 1992 A League of their Own, and for the first time, was struck by the cruelty towards Mrs. Cuthbert, played by Pauline Brailsford. Weird how a supposedly feminist film treats this woman whose only crime seems to be having a shitty, thankless job. She's insulted, poisoned, sexually assaulted, and treated with utter contempt, all played for laughs. And somehow I never noticed before. #feminism #blindspots #ageism #patriarchy #misogyny
They even went for victim blaming bonus points by having Tom Hanks act like he is the one who was assaulted. The poisoning episode was even more depraved. The young women wanted to go out and get drunk, and everyone seemed to think poisoning her was a hilarious, and not at all psychopathic way to get past her. If they'd treated her like a human, maybe she could have been persuaded to go to bed early, or even come out with them.
And I never noticed until now.
