Comparing the steps recorded by the skmei 2596 on my left wrist Vs the mi band 7 on my right wrist today. #skmei #watch
@foobarry were you walking in a circle? 🤔
@Brianrh I was doing the washing up rather energetically... But within 10% margin for such a cheap watch (skmei) is looking pretty good. And who's to say the mi band is more accurate?

@foobarry I have on several occasions started to count my steps at the start of a walk but always get distracted before I get too far.

As you say who can say the mi band is accurate. They never and I suppose can't, quote a steps count accuracy figure.

@foobarry that's close enough for me. I think I'll get the fluorescent green one. 😂
@joeress hmmm inexplicably the step counter was disabled today. The "manual" (information sheet) is quite hard to understand.
@foobarry The problem with many Skmei models is that the viewing angles can be terrible. How is it on this one?
@ruario same issue, i'm afraid. viewing from a 5 o clock position, (e.g about 150 degrees from north), i get a good angle. looking directly square-on , the slightest variation in my wrist can produce a good or bad visibility. viewing from about 210-240 degrees is terrible.

@foobarry That is a real shame and also interesting because while many Skmei have this to an extent, some are clearly worse than others and on the flip side some are much better than others.

The Skmei 2540 is a terrible watch for a bunch of reasons (see link) but the viewing angles at least are really good.

I also have a 1096 and that is great and have heard that the 2514 is too. others like the 2218 might not be perfect but are good enough IMHO.

So Skmei can do this but for some reason, often they do not. 🤷

Attached: 1 image Really not a fan of this watch. I sort of hate it a bit. I knew I wouldn't like it before I bought it. I actually bought it mainly to check on some things and see how #Skmei is progressing in certain areas. However even with my low expectations it is disappointing.

@foobarry It's not usually an absolute show stopper and I realise part of this is that you are paying very little (so what do you expect) but at the same time it can be annoying when you try to do a quick glance and then realise you have to square up the face to properly see it.
@ruario the showstopper for me atm is getting the step counter to work each morning without having to manually enable it :(

@foobarry Yeah that sounds worse.

P.S. I just remembered I also have a 2688 (which would have been a nice watch but the size is too big for the retro style and they used a smartwatch style case). However, with regards to viewing angles, features and animations it is all good. So again, Skmei have all the parts. They just struggle to consitently bring it all together.

@foobarry And if you are wondering why I have so many of these watches when I kinda hate many/most of them. I am just curious about the products and want to see if they finally nail it. It is a little micro-obsession. Most of these watches end up in a drawer after I have understood all the positives and negatives. 😂
@ruario yeah, i think what i want is something like the casio ABL-100 ( https://www.casio.com/uk/watches/casio/vintage/product.ABL-100WE-1A/ ) but in the 2596 case and strap. steps+bluetooth+plastic case is the ideal for me

@foobarry So why not the Casio WS-B1000? It is the basicallt the same module (from a user perspective, albeit visually a bit different) as the ABL-100. I have the ABL-100 myself and the counting is good!

@ruario i had no idea this watch existed! thanks. adding to my "watch list"
@foobarry My namesake @mactunag has a Casio WS-B1000 IIRC and has been happy with it AFAIK. Maybe he wants to add some comment?

@ruario @foobarry yooo, yes! I really like the watch, it's super simple. Step count seems accurate enough and has Bluetooth to connect to phone via the Casio app, which keeps a log of the steps overall (I usually stop it after uploading step counts tbh).

Keeps time well, alarm goes off when asked 😆(adjustable via watch or app) and the hourly beep is useful to me. It's fairly sturdy and the display is alright for toughness (it has a few scratches but I'm often out in the garden or grubbing around, DIY etc).

@mactunag @ruario thanks - on the UK amazon page, there's a big price difference between compact and sporty. is there any size difference between them? https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0D4WHVJKY

@foobarry @mactunag I didn't think this watch came in different sizes. 🤔

Another nice feature of these watches is time sync via Bluetooth, so you are always bang on time and stuff like DST changes are dealt with.

@ruario @mactunag i'm very close to pulling the trigger on the casio. shame you can't sync the steps with any other app except the casio one. i feel like that app is gonna die one day and we'll be out of luck

@foobarry @mactunag Nah, you are OK. For one thing you can use the watch without the app. For another there are third party apps that support Casio. I used one myself at the beginning.

At the time it didn't support every feature of these (then new) modules but I would assume the support has or will only improve over time.

Ok, note to others, the third party app "G-Shock Smart Sync" by Ivo Zivkov can actually connect to this watch and it does allow configuring a bunch of the stuff (albeit not everything on my watch) and it doesn't require any Casio ID. @foobarry Also the Casio official app supports a lot of their watches including some quite expensive GShocks. They will want to support that for some time and I assume many of the underlying APIs are essentially the same, so probably not too bad maintaining support for this as well.
