Argh! I'm currently nursing my #Fairphone 4 with #IodeOS 6 on it right now, But I'm left wondering aka fighting internally as my brain is a right pain in the proverbial as to whether I keep the FP4 and upgrade IodeOS or purchase a FP5 and put #PostmarketOS on it. Or even maybe purchase a Pixel 9 pro and go #GrapheneOS ??? Either way I'm going to have to keep a device for UK banking apps be it an old mobile or a tablet. But what to do ? Aren't you glad that your head doesn't work like mine ?
@[email protected] What are you using for a mobile daily driver wise these days and how do you find it ?

@justine

Pixel 6 with GrapheneOS.

I will need to replace it soon, as Pixel 6 is reaching the end of software updates for GrapheneOS, which is a shame (although understandable) as the phone works just fine.

I will replace it with another Pixel running GrapheneOS. Much as I love my various other Linux phones, they are not yet there for me for a work phone.

@justine my head always spins around like that and I hate it.
Anyway, if you prefer privacy and security you should aim for GrapheneOS on a Pixel (what I do).
But I'd you maybe prefer a more sustainable phone (environment and fair pay for workers), I guess a fairphone would be better. Though all new Pixels today get at least 7 years of upgrades so it's quite good for the environment also.
Thanks and glad to hear that it's not just me.
@justine I've spent weeks trying to figure out the bests domain name etc. Was talking to people at work and I saw that their mouth meved but I did not hear one thing they said because I was only thinking about the domain name.
I also had a period where I changed my default browser like ten times a day because I wanted to find the best solution 😅🤷🏻‍♂️
@justine my banking apps work just fine with IodéOS. In fact, everything works except what I don't want to work: Google.
Yeah mine do too but if I moved to PostmarketOS they most likely won't even under waydroid hence maybe a separate device for that purpose.
@justine why would you want to move to PostmarketOS?
@justine I bought a secondhand Pixel 6 Pro yesterday and have put GrapheneOS on it. There's a lot that I need to learn yet, but most things are working. I have set up a Banking profile and got the apps installed, but haven't got around to logging them in yet. I'm expecting issues but I'm also expecting eventual success (or workarounds).
Oh cool! Please do let me know how you get on.

@justine for PostmarketOS its not very viable for daily driving right now. The Farphone 5 dies not have earpiece support, so calling does work but only with speakers and external audio like Bluetooth (from what I remember, I'm not sure about Bluetooth but I think it would work). And switching audio sources doesn't work during calls.

Android app support is also flakey. To be fair haven't tried it with a device with more ram and power like the Fairphone 5. Only tried with a pixel 3a. There is also work going on to port the proprietary Aliendalvik android app support to postmarketOS.

But anyway if you want a phone with better audio support and calling the Oneplus 6 / 6T are good. Thats the one that has most support now. But the Fairphone 5 has made a lot of progress so its not very unrealistic to think it will get more progress.

There is also security. For data harvesting you don't really have to worry much of course, it being Linux. But physical hardware attacks are more of a danger, like someone using SSH.

@justine I think we are brain siblings! I do this all the time, and seem to spend more time these days agonising over the right/best way to do things than actually doing anything productive!

Hope you manage to pick an option you are happy with.

@justine

All of your choises mentioned above are the RIGHT steps to opt-out from the data monsters!

Graphene is the best option, in 2027 Motorola will launch a new device compatible with GOS! Whilst you're stepping away by flashing GrapheneOS, you currently still need to buy a Google device, hence supporting satan!

If you like #IodeOS I want to recommend the SHIFTphone 8.1 designed by #novacustom I personally met the team at Fossdem and the device is really slick.

@justine I have grapheneOS and have used all kinds of apps from the Google play store. Most work without issue. Sometimes I have to change a permission, but not a hard task. I use Aurora to install apps from the play store, and everything works.

@justine
I'm running e/os on a Fairphone 6. It gives me Signal and banking apps via microg, but I'm waiting to see if Calyx comes back.

I liked their openness with their key management, and the tone of their comms.
