@Amgine asks:

Q4a. Do you gps track your rides?
Q4b. If so, do you use a dedicated device or your mobile phone?
Q4c. Is your ride data on the web?

#BikeNitePQ: I think this is a re-#cycle, but a multi-part question: * Do you gps track your rides? * If so, do you use a dedicated device or your mobile phone? * Is your ride data on the web? A thing I found out about years ago: #OSMAnd mobile app has a plugin for sharing your location. It requires configuring for your tracking service (I use a Nextcloud instance with a plugin to produce the secure API,) which was easy for me and fuss-free since. A4a: I track every trail ride. I almost never track street rides, which are mostly just errand-running around town.
A4b: OsmAnd on my phone, except with the Specialized ebike where I use the (annoying but data-packed) Specialized app which also logs a bunch of other data.
A4c: no, I almost never upload my tracks

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite A4: No, no, and no, because one of the things I like about biking is _not_ being so very trackable.

#BikeNite

@moira Very important to me now that it is all indie web, no corporate services!

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite Usually I use GPS when planning rides more than generally tracking them. About a full year back I got a beeline bike hud that makes the process quite convenient.

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite

A4. Yes to all.

ETA: Clarifying that A4b is a dedicated device.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite #BikeNite A4, have done ever since around 2006 when I got a Garmin Edge. Have used assorted Garmin Edges ever since and strava / ridewithgps, I'm sure people can find me there if they want to

One thing i regret is not _really_ have good logs of some of the other rides I did as I went on a lot of tours (some w/ friends, some large organized ones) 1980's-2006

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite A4: I try to record all my rides - mostly just for fun - not for any other real reason and use the Runkeeper app. Years ago I spelled my name out using an app too #BikeNite
@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite A4a: Yes when riding for fitness/recreation. A4b: I mount my phone on the handlebars to use it as a cycling computer. A4c: Yes, on Strava. #BikeNite
@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite
#BikeNite A4:
A cycling tour leader once referred to me as an "EFI" since I record "every *freaking inch" of my rides. I have triple redundancy, using my phone, my watch and my Garmin to record, just in case one or two fails. (Today I neglected to hit the start ride button on my phone, but the other 2 were successful.) All my rides are available online, and are also recorded in a spreadsheet.

@MartyCormack @ascentale @Amgine @bikenite

Thanks, I'd forgotten about EFI. My late wife did an organized group ride from LA to Boston, and a lot of the people on the ride got EFI t-shirts.

#bikenite

@wanderinghermit @MartyCormack @ascentale @Amgine @bikenite
I'm not good at keeping track of things so, like another rider I know, take pride in knowing the miles I do record will still add up to an impressive total.
Now, when I'm close to a number, suddenly I'm tracking more and maybe even going back and recording from those commutes that didn't get counted, rounding down of course :P
@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite #BikeNite A4
I currently use FittoTrack on Android to save rides. Transfer to PC via export to GPX and save in NextCloud.
Then I upload the activities to #GeoActivityPlayground and track lots of fun things there.
Previous I've used a garmin cycle computer with GPS to track PVT + HR + cadence, and then an Android phone with ANT+ to do the same straight into Strava (x10 mini was a fantastic phone for this). All that data is now in GAP, going back to 2009
@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite Phone in my pocket gives **terrible** location data. Putting it in a bag on the rack does much better.

A4. Yes, dedicated device, and it usually updates a live track (via my phone) so my wife knows roughly where I am.

But… I ride a lot of places where there's no phone signal, so I bought a satellite tracker which also updates to the web. It's not as easy to remember to turn on, but as long as I'm carrying it, it's a more reliable method of raising an alarm if needed.

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite

#BikeNite #BikeTooter #cycling

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite

A4a. Sometimes.
A4b. For shorter tracked rides, I just use the RideWithGPS app on my smart-o-phone. For longer ones, I use a Garmin hiking gps.
A4c. I upload to RideWithGPS, so, yes.

But I do a lot of riding I don't really track aside from ~yearly odometer updates. It is too much work to track it all because of commuting/errands by bikes.

Q4) since that post asks about *sharing* location, I want to shout out the FMD (Find My Device) android app, from F-Droid (open source play store)

It allows friends to text you with the message "fmd locate", and it sends them a map link as a text.. all with no cloud, no vendor, and it doesn't even need cellular data. Just GPS and text messaging.

A very privacy friendly alternative to the Google service.

@NNN

That's cool! I've had #FindMyDevice on my phone forever, but never thought of it as a #FindMyHusband for $SPOUSE.

#BikeNite A4

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite I generally have my Wahoo GPS running while I’m riding, often as not I’ve planned out a route but “it’s a ride, not a race” is my motto so sometimes how I got there isn’t according to plan. I do usually keep them in #ridewithgps but it’s more for keeping track of total mileage than any performance metrics. #bikenite #wahooligan
@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite #BikeNite A4. a: Only my fitness rides. b: I use Strava on my iPhone. And, c: absolutely not.

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite

A4a. Yes
A4b. Dedicated device
A4c. Yes

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite #bikenite A4, I usually track my using ride with GPS on my phone, and then log them in a spreadsheet. In the winter I also log kilometers on the #frostpendeln site.

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite

I use a Garmin GPS to track my rides and save selected gdb/gpx track., I usually use GPS visualizer to create maps when desired. This is how I built https://gpstrailmaps.blogspot.com/

I also use the GPS for stats on the winter bike but uses the bike computer on the ebike to track, distance, time, average speed and max speed that I record in a spreadsheet using Libre Office

Richard's GPS Trail Maps

This is not a "blog" in the sense of a daily journal but a place for me to post GPS trail maps of mountain biking and hiking trails, particularly but not exclusively, in the western Greenbelt in Ottawa, Ontario.
Hybrid & E-Bikeable Routes and National Capital Region Cycling Routes and Resources are also included on this site,

Date codes do not reflect actual posting dates but are manipulated to allow me to order the posts in a thematic order.

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite #bikenite A4: Mostly, except for commuter rides which I've done a million times. Just using RideWithGPS on my phone, it works pretty well. I don't pay too much attention to total distances etc, but my favourite thing about it is it can draw a "personal heatmap" of recorded rides, and I like the way it shows the connected and tangled paths I've taken through the outskirts of Melbourne. A couple of times I've planned rides specifically to connect areas together, eg: I'd done a whole lot of riding out from Mt Dandenong and out to Warburton, and a whole lot around the city, so I came up with a ride from Ringwood out to Mt Dandenong to join those two groups of tracks together. Connecting up to the Great Ocean Road might be a bit more challenging!
@nickzoic @ascentale @bikenite I'm a sucker for the various third-party visualisation and colouring-in websites that tie in to strava or other data. Joining up places ridden is a fun target at times
@ajft @ascentale @bikenite oh that's cool i wonder if ridewithgps can export a map like that ...
@nickzoic all the third party stuff seems to tie in to Strava, unfortunately (either that or roll your own and feed it the gpx tracks)
@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite A4a. Yes
A4b. I use both my watch, and the Cadence app on my iPhone.
A4c. No I don’t publish my rides, but I’m sure somebody could get at them…
#BikeNite
@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite #BikeNite A4. Nope, nope, nope. Privacy leak, no need for anyone to know where I'm going.

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite A4: I use GPS for navigation, via the Komoot app on the phone. The trip data are sent to the service, but not published there. Data for some of my small tours is published on my blog, at https://fgbjr.name.

#BikeNite A4: I sometimes track my rides with #OSMAND on my phone. Just on the phone, not uploaded to public services, unless I'm specifically riding for mapping purposes.

But OsmAnd takes too much power and kills my phone battery too fast, so I rarely track my ride unless I'm in new places, or I want to see how far out-of-the-way that shortcut really is, or it's a group ride and I have this idea I'll get around to blogging about it someday.

@ascentale
@Amgine @bikenite

Also, I have trouble separating the cycling tracking from driving tracking. In theory, the cycling tracks show up green on the map and the driving tracks show up red, but I keep doing something wrong and they get mixed up. And when I look at the tracks folder the cycling tracks are indistinguishable from the driving tracks, and everything exports/imports with no predefined colour.

One of these days I'll set up the live tracking in #OSMAND so $SPOUSE can check where I am. Nice to know there's a #Nextcloud plugin so I don't have to roll my own tracking client!

@bobjonkman @ascentale

One thing I really like about OSMAnd is the elevation tracking and visualization graph. It is very noisy since GPS-based altitude is … less than precise, but it is very good for ride visualizationn and comparison.

A smoothing feature might be a nice improvement.

@bobjonkman @ascentale

One of the things I learned to do on my previous (old) phone was to shut off the modem uses when out and about.

I did not use it for streaming sound, so bluetooth is off. I am not at home, so wifi is off.

Killing everything but cellular, and making sure it is in low-power mode, just about doubled the working time.

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite A4a. Sometimes, mainly if it's longer and I want to see numbers go up for the dopamine rush of "oooh more miles!" way.

A4b. Mostly my phone with the Beeline app, though I busted the device sometime back and haven't fixed it yet.

A4c. Sadly yes, but not where I own the data really.

A4
Yes. Mostly.
If I'm popping to the local shop, then no.
My commute is tracked on my Garmin watch.
Any touring or just long distance I don't know the route for, I use a Garmin head unit.
I used to be very into my stats on Strava, but that itch has gone. I suspect in the next year or two I'll probably not be recording my commutes either.
I can't see what Q4c is on my phone, so I'm rambling instead.

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite

Aha. A4c
My data is accessible on the web, but it's locked down (hopefully) to only mutuals on Garmin and a Strava

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite

#BikeNiteQ #BikeNite #BikeTooter #Cycling #MastoBikes

Yes, always. Via a Garmin mounted in front of handlebars. Yes most of it's available.

I mark some rides private as I often go off track whenever I can and don't want a permanent public record of not being on sanctioned paths. I always mark as private when visiting relatives or friends

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite

Q4a: Yes
Q4b: Dedicated Device
Q4c: Yes

#BikeNite

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite
A4a partly
A4b dedicated device (Lezyne computer going strong since 2017)
A4c Strava, though I am disillusioned with the platform and now lazy about uploading.

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite A4. I think the surveillance aspects of the tools I'd use to do this have dissuaded me.

I'm not really interested from a "personal best" aspect, but from being able to retrace where I went when I'm somewhere new and can't remember where I saw something.

I have even more interest in retracing routes for walking, but same surveillance worries.
#BikeNite

@meganL garmin fenix is great for this, even walking on trails

i set mine up with a phone then factory reset the phone and use the USB to directly read the watch's files in gpxsee

it can also retrace your steps on the fly

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite

A4a. Yes.
A4b. With a specific app (Overland) on my phone.
A4c. No. I abandoned Komoot as not worth it and only ever share still images of routes on my own site, so not really data.

#bikenite

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite

A4.
a. Yes, excluding rides to the shops or the pub.
b. A dedicated device, almost always a Garmin watch. I only use a device on my stem or handlebars if I need it to follow a route. Otherwise, I don't want the display distracting me.
c. Yes, but not publicly available.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite A4 I track almost everything that I ride using either my watch (Garmin) or cycling computer (Garmin). I enjoy collecting tiles also with Squadrats. I very rarely share where I am other than with family members in case there’s a serious incident. My ride data is available on Strava but only to friends and family.

#bikenite

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite A4: Sometimes, especially if solo riding into the hinterlands. I do it so I can be found if something goes sideways & sometimes to track my workouts. I use Strava, as its lowest effort for me. #BikeNite

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite A4. I used to use Strava on my phone to track rides, but eventually lost interest in doing so. Now I just ride an unmeasured life 😀🚴‍♀️❤️

#BikeNite

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite

A4a. Yes.

A4b. Used to use Strava until they started using LLM. Now mainly use Open Tracks.

A4c. Ride with GPS sometimes.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite

4a. I track almost every ride. My watch automatically starts tracking my short rides, like my commute.

4b. I use a Garmin Edge for longer rides. I've tried mounting my phone on the handlebars in the past but it would suffer heat stroke in direct sunlight or otherwise the battery would die.

4c. It's mostly on Ride with GPS but not all public

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite
4a. Yes, I start tracking, whenever I leave a building (which almost always happens by bike)
4b. mobile phone with OpenTracks
4c. on strava, unfortunately. Couldn't find the time and motivation to look into better services like @endurain or @FitTrackee. But at least it gives such nice statistics and maps (via VeloViewer "add-on").

#OpenTracksApp #BikeNite

@ascentale @Amgine @bikenite A5 yeah, bike computer into Strava. Of course, if you do this after your athletic peak, it becomes a measure of your decline. Would recommend. #BikeNite
