#AskFedi

Going to start fresh with #HomeAutomation at the new place. Going to go back to #HomeAssistant but keeping my expectations low.

Here's the question:
#Zwave or #Zigbee ? I have a lot of Zwave hardware, but I'll need new stuff.

I will have to communicate with and inside an all-metal barn (only about 20' away). Until I get ethernet in there, I'm going to have to be sneaky with anything wireless.

@BenHM3 If you have current Z-Wave devices, I'd consider Z-Wave for old stuff, Matter for new stuff that supports it, falling back to Z-Wave for devices that don't have a good Matter option yet. One nice thing about the ZBT-2 is it can be flashed for either Zigbee or Matter. (But you would have to pick one at some point.)
@BenHM3 I do find #HomeAssistant a bit disappointing so far. Its ability to bridge weird ecosystems is amazing but it can fail opaquely to do some of the simplest things.

@toonie

Yeah. The non-default ZWave UI (zwavejs) has some excellent logs that I can never find easily. I can at least find out if it was transmitted.

@BenHM3 a Faraday cage is definitely going to make your life difficult there. Maybe if you manage to get a Zigbee repeater node right at a door or window?

@mweiss

Thats my plan. Going to push the stupid thru-wall window-ac’s out, and keep at least one opening just for that pass-through. Put a Zwave and zigbee device there.

Of course, no plan survives contact with reality.
