Today's impulse buy at the thrift store was this wooden doodad that I'm assuming has something to with spinning wool, though I'm not entirely sure. Is it a weird looking spindle? Something else? Any ideas?

Edit: several people have suggested a phang spindle (yay, new word!), which seems very likely. And know I have a name to do more research.

@Stratski Could be a garden dibber, used to plant seeds.
@piquant00 Oh, that's entirely possible! I found it at the crafting section of the shop, but it does look like a gardening tool as well.
@Stratski shuttle?
@Stratski I will have to look up the definition of distaff again, it is an interesting read itself
@i_give_u_worms Hm, i dont think so, i think is too thick for comfortable weaving.
VIRGIN - KENSIE Phang Spindel aus Mahagoni

Diese schlanke Spindel ist unbemalt und wirkt allein durch ihr schönes Holz.   KENSIE ist eine unterstĂĽtzt laufende Phang Spindel mit…

@lisettedeboer ooh, that does look very much like my thing! Thank you, now I have a name to find out more!
@Stratski It might be a supported spindle? It would have one end resting in a little bowl on the floor as it spins, basically.
@LisaMaesie I think it is, yes. Thanks!
@Stratski interesting. The tapering is wrong for a nostepinne and it would be a weird shape for a spindle but you never know! Will It Spindle?
@venite apparently it will! I believe it's a phang spindle, for supported spinning.

@Stratski

How long/tall is it?

My first guess is a supported spindle (perhaps a goddess-style phang spindle?)-- you'd twirl it on the pointy tip (on a flat surface or a bowl) and draft with the other tip. The cop can be wound around the middle of the spindle, and you can create a temporary cop closer to where you're drafting.

I suspect the bit of string attached to it might've come from a leader that you can attach your fiber to to get started?

@dykexis Yes, i think so! Someone else linked to a picture of a lang spindle that looks exactly like mine. Thank you for thinking with me!

@Stratski

No problem-o!
I always enjoy hearing about fiber craft tools in the wild (:
Looking forward to seeing your spinning when you get a chance to try it out!

@Stratski A wool spindle or maybe a winder for kite flying 🤔
@Stratski could it be a distaff? for holding wool for spinning? not completely sure though
@alienskyler No, it looks like it's a slightly unusual type of spindle for spinning.k
