Positive News: France has announced its plan to ditch Windows & switch to Linux for government desktops. 🥳 🇫🇷

Not only that, but they have also moved 80, 000 National Health Insurance Fund Employees to open source alternatives replacing U.S owned Big Tech platforms like Microsoft Teams & Zoom.

It’s amazing to see the country take action, push for real digital sovereignty, & opt for open source solutions! 👏

@Tutanota What is the alternative to Zoom that they are using?
@starluna The public services have their own video call platform called "Visio" :) I've used it a few times at school and it works great
@ethanbvg Thank you for the explanation. I saw the reference to that and I was confused for a minute because Visio is also a Microsoft product that makes flow charts and things like that.
@starluna @Tutanota You have to see it for yourself (Matrix).
@starluna @Tutanota my guess would probably be jitsi
Visio - LaSuite

Visio est la solution de visioconférence souveraine de l’État, pour échanger en toute confiance : fiable, sécurisée, ouverte et hébergée en France.

@Tutanota
15 years after when we should have. Better late than never I guess.
@Tutanota That is very good step. Also they need to promote eu-based software preferably.

@PapaFatHead @Tutanota

Yeah, I wonder what office suite they will use. 🤔

@Tutanota ... but companies can't switch because of
🌟 reasons 🌟
-.-
@Tutanota Way to go France. Next do phones.
@pr06lefs @Tutanota The fact you need an up-to-date, un-rooted, safetynet enabled Android or iPhone for most banking apps is one of my biggest gripes.
We can have administrative privileges everywhere, just not our phones?
What a cruel joke

@Tutanota

"France has announced its plan to ditch Windows & switch to Linux for government desktops."

actually, no... they've announced that one of the government agencies / group will be moving to Linux.. not the entire government!

Wizard's first rule: people will believe something because they want to believe it's true...

the entire French government moving to Linux sounds very nice but that doesn't mean it's true! I'd recommend waiting until we have an accurate source that actually says this before getting all excited about it

(see my other post in a related convo:

El Duvelle (@[email protected])

@[email protected] As great as this sounds, I think this transition is just for this specific group "direction interministérielle du numérique (DINUM)" and not for the entire government.. Your source says >"la DINUM annonce sa sortie de Windows au profit de postes sous système d'exploitation Linux.". which means "The DINUM announces its exit from Windows towards workstations using Linux" It doesn't say that *all* governmental agencies will do this transition.. (unfortunately, and hopefully this will come later)

@elduvelle @Tutanota
At least it is a step in the right direction.
FOSS alternatives to MS are much better than they used to be, in fact, the commercial stuff seems to be getting worse, more and more SAAS, reliant on cloud based solutions.
@wyliecoyoteuk yes, of course, still - we should stop propagating information that might be wrong without a reliable source to go with it!

@elduvelle @wyliecoyoteuk

Every Minister in the french government has to work on a migration plan. This plans must be ready until the end of 2026. (https://winfuture.de/news,158029.html)

And they work on "La Suite numérique". Open source, in collaboration with the Netherlands and Germany. (https://github.com/suitenumerique)

@elduvelle @Tutanota
Few weeks ago I read in paper that some big cities as Toulouse had rejected windows in their administration. Little by little it’s on move but it requires a lot of change and it can’t be done very fast

@Tutanota

This is good, I like this. They aren't actually like fully switching but this is a step in the right direction.

The statement the French Government made about GrapheneOS still pisses me off though, we cannot excuse that and we need to remind them.

@Tutanota Hopefully it won't introduce too may hiccups to make people not familiar with open-source be dissapointed.

@aditya_07

Welcome 🙂 , and you are in good company

Brave , wondering what the learnings from the city of Munich were (many years back)

@geolr @Tutanota

It works in Schleswig-Holstein in the north of Germany.

@Tutanota ага, только теперь всё будет более дырявым и уязвимым. Молодцы!
@Tutanota is it finally the year of the Linux desktop?

@vanlug France leads the way!

Au revoir US big tech.

@Tutanota i love this, viva la france!
@Tutanota I've always had respect for France's superior cuisine and now intelligence!

@Tutanota

It is the only option for independence and safety and integrity of our data.

The whole EU needs to follow.

@Tutanota
I agree with @elduvelle

it's a very small part of what should be done.
Far from that, I wait to see which budget will be given for those tasks (and It's quite difficult In France right now on this purpose)

there is ONE important move that could be done to explain that France is wishing to leave GAFAM

President Macron could stop communicating on X ( but he doesn't and will not)😡

last things : should we talk about France dependencies when it comes to cloud ??

@Tutanota

Considering that Microsoft products are astonishingly bad, it is about time. Maybe a few decades too late, but this is the second best time.

@Tutanota the biggest problem is with chat and video apps - theres no better alternative thanbig corps

@Tutanota we need to start doing the same here in the UK, specially for the NHS where a good amount of money is spent on software licensing.

#UK #nhs

Hi, how are you doing today?.
@Tutanota finally one government in Europe is getting serious about the Big Tech threat. More please.
@Tutanota this is amazing news. Sucks for us developers over here but please, keep putting the wrench to big tech!
@Tutanota I wish the switch lasts, as I don't think it'd be the first time a move away from Windows happens in certain public administration, to later be reverted and Windows adopted again.
@Tutanota
Just to say it, I think we should be pushing to leave all big tech in general, not just U.S. big tech, as it's labeled all the time. The threat of greed and data is a global problem.
