@GMIK69 Problem was, it wasn't just a shortage of ventilators, it was the shortage of ICU level staff to attend to such critically ill patients. "Not enough beds" doesn't mean you're just missing the equipment, it means you're missing the people to stand alongside those beds.

Also, in terms of averting deaths, a far bigger problem in South America was the lack of reliable enriched oxygen sources (o2 canisters, oxygen concentrators, etc.).

@Infoseepage This is exactly what happened here in Italy: unstaffed ICU beds, or staffed with unskilled newly graduate doctors and nurses, disruption in oxygen provision. The result was a second deadly wave in autumn '20 and subsequently with delta wave. Nothing changed since then.

@GMIK69 I've heard it said that Germany did very well due to in many ways having an "overbuilt" health system. Thing is, it's not actually overbuilt, it's just built to handle non-average pressures on the system which can be expected from time to time.

@Infoseepage I fear sincerely that next pandemic will impact catastrophically in a world plagued by wars and military expenditures at expense of public health systems. All hopes sparked by the covid19 tragedy faded quickly.

@GMIK69 We didn't build back better, that's for sure. We've got mRNA vaccines potentially now, but those only reached a small portion of the globe and we didn't really build out the infrastructure for rapid mass manufacturing and cold chain delivery and administration.

@GMIK69 The images which came out of places like Peru will be forever burned in my head. So many people died there for lack of simple medical oxygen. Over twice US/Italy death rates per million (officially). Couldn't figure out a way to donate to them, but ended up donating money to buy a few o2 concentrators for India.
